59/custom hybrid Question?

So in the old thread it is mentioned often to use a 59 bridge coil with the custom coil. But the description for the retail one states that they use a 59 neck coil. "Harmonically rich hybrid humbucker that uses one coil from the 59 Model neck and one coil from the higher output Duncan Custom model."
Which is the correct way? I homemade one with a 59 neck coil and a custom coil, am I missing out because I didn't use a 59 bridge coil instead? So far it sounds fantastic, but if there is more mojo using the 59 bridge coil instead, then I want the extra mojo. Any information would be nice, thanks!

Re: 59/custom hybrid Question?

Zhedder,
Hello, it says when using it split the 7K coil is a great sounding Strat like pickup. The 59 =7.6, so 7.6 divided by 2 is 3.8 or so.
The Duncan Custom = 14.1, so 14.1 divided by 2 is 7.05.
Therefore I would think the inner coil of the bridge would be the 7.05 bobbin from the custom, as it would be too weak if they used the 59. Therefore#2 the custom coil should be the slug, and the 59 should be the screw poles.
I believe (and this would be my mistake) but it makes more sense for a split coil in a bridge pickup to use the slugs for the Strat sound as the screw coil is way to close to the bridge and would sound bad, very overly brash and not enough vibration for the magnet to pick up. No matter what pickup you split. Seth, Whole Lotta, etc... I am quite willing to be wrong, but don't think so. I hope this helps,
Steve Buffington.

This wrong product description is just one little thing on a several-miles long list of things that went terribly wrong when they went live with the actual website.

They got the DC reading right, though. 7.1K for half of a 14.2K Custom and 4.1K for half of a 8.2K '59 bridge. There you have your proof! ;)

Hopefully, they'll address this some time in 2020. ;)

It is on the list! :)

Either way, it is one of my favorite bridge pickups.

Ok thanks, that's what I was after. I thought the resistance that they listed seemed more like they used a 59 bridge coil instead of the neck coil. It does still work and sound pretty good using the neck coil of a 59, but I will have to pick up a 59 bridge sometime to try it the proper way. :)

Yeah, it's fantastic using the a 59 neck coil (apparently it should be a 59 bridge coil)! I love the freaking thing, so different from matching coils. I still haven't installed the alnico 2 left over one in my Schecter Solo 6 because I have been enjoying the alnico 5 one in my Lonestar Strat so much.

Re: 59/custom hybrid Question?

I wouldn't be able to tell the difference.

Thanks Clint, hey my name is Clint as well! Using a 59 neck coil with the custom sounds in every way just like everything I have heard on youtube and in duncans sound clips, so I am pretty happy with it. For the sake of posterity though, gonna have to try making one with a bridge coil someday. I think I am going to safely tuck away the leftover 59 neck slug coil and use a JB slug to make a JB/Custom and try that out now. Any magnet suggestions on the 59n/custom or JB/Custom?

Re: 59/custom hybrid Question?

Anyone think that a 59n/sentient would be any good for a neck pickup?

Re: 59/custom hybrid Question?

It gracefully takes any Alnico grade, although my favorite are A2, A4, UOA5 and A8.

HTH,

I like how bright the A5 is, but it seems a wee bit to sharp on B and E strings. I like how much bass and thump the A5 has. Which one of those 4 would keep the thump but sweeten up the treble a little. I am guessing you'll say UOA5, but if not any guidance or info helps. Although it's not hard to just check, this strat likes to break the high e string after a couple of loosening and tightenings for magnet swaps.

So I am not sure if anyone is interested, but I tried a couple magnets. Polished A2 was nice and fairly EVH sounding, but not enough chest thump in the bass, unoriented A5 (I tried 2 different ones) was pretty cool, incredibly early EVH sounding with an interesting vowel like growl with one of them but the other one sounded terrible to me for some reason (the bad one had the side towards the screw coil pretty smooth, while the good sounding one had two rough sides with lots of pitting on the edges). I started out with a polished A5 and it thumped and had almost JB (with rough A5) levels of output with a snappy sassy treble (much like my wife). I settled on a roughcast A5 that still had plenty of chest thump and a sweetened treble, sweeter then on the polished A2, but the A2 could have been brighter due to the mid-high frequency seeming slightly enhanced. Nope, I'm not sure what I settled on, I like the UOA5 lots as well. Gonna have to record and then switch back to the rough A5 and record again. Tough choice and awesome hybrid. Are there any higher output hybrids that sound this good?
