59 Custom Hybrid

I have a SH-5 Custom bridge and a WLH neck in my SG. It really does everything that I want it to. I use the Custom for everything from 70s leads to 90s metal. Also I really like the WLH for cleans and it's awesome for my blues playing. I can even get early Black Sabbath tones out of the WLH neck. But I'm ready to swap the 57 classics out of my backup SG. I really want a different setup, so when I get l tired of one maybe the other one will motivate me. I'm really thinking about the 59 Custom Hybrid bridge but I can't decide on a neck. I've never been a fan of the 59n and I want something different than the WLHn. I want a neck that will really growl, has tons of sustain and will still be compatible with the 59 Custom Hybrid bridge. Thanks for any help.

Re: 59 Custom Hybrid

I really think the Pearly Gates has the most growl. If you're open to mag swaps you can have all the growl you want. Plus it fits in with blues and classic metal etc.

I really don't know anything about mag swaps. I have a guy that changes all of my pickups out for me. That's over my head.lol

over your head? All you've gotta do is unscrew four little screws, push out the old, push in the new.

I really love the Sentient with the Hybrid. In particular the tones with both split are amazing. Had that set up for a while in my KOA Carvin DC 127 ( now has a n Alt 8 bridge) have it in my mahogany neck and body Quilt top Carvin DC 400 now. Super versatile set up with some really killer tones. The PG neck also works well is a little less articulate under gain and ruder but really nice also.

Magnet swaps are easier than soldering pickups (unless they are covered pickups), and you'd probably have a new appreciation for the 59n after trying a couple of different magnets. The stock A5 is the only magnet I DON'T like in 59s.

Re: 59 Custom Hybrid

Don't blame you for wanting to swap out the '57's. I just haven't cared for their tones in any of my guitars. The '59/Custom hybrid is bright & mid-scooped, which works for some players, but others prefer it with a warmer magnet (A2 or UOA5). Both parent pickups are bright & scooped, and the significantly mismatched coils add to that (7.K and 4.1K). If you want treble & clarity, you'll get plenty of that.

For me, PGN's have been warm, I didn't hear any sizzle or growl. '59N's can have a lot of low end in some guitars, more than some players want. I'd look at a Jazz for brighter tones without the '59N's low end, or an A2P for richer, fuller tones without as much high end.

Re: 59 Custom Hybrid

I just swapped a set of Pearly Gates set into my SG with new 500k audio pots and .022uf caps on both pickups. It's a pretty fat sound, especially from the neck. The neck may be a little too fat actually, which surprised me considering the neck pickup on an SG is set back closer to the bridge than a Les Paul. I'm new to Alnico 2 magnets and vintage output, so I dunno. I'm still tweaking and I may try to swap out the .022uf capacitor for a .015uf and see how that sounds.

Re: 59 Custom Hybrid

^ I recommend A9 in the neck. If you want a change in the bridge, I recommend A6. You can also convert your neck tone to a no load.

Re: 59 Custom Hybrid

I'd go for a Black Winter neck...it growls, and it has power. And it does a lot more than the description says.

Don't know the BW but do know Duncan has a real tendency to shoot themselves in the foot by how they label and market pickups pretty consistently.
3 that come to mind are-
The Sentient marketed as a metal pickup but in reality is a lower output very nice versatile pickup that has meat clarity and articulation with gain but also richness and sweetness clean plus is one of the best neck pickups IMO Duncan has split.
The Alt 8 is more like a more modern bigger meaner tighter and smoother JB it also cleans and opens up very well with touch or guitar volume for a pickup with this much gain.
The Full Shread is a medium gain very versatile articulate pickup not just a high gain shreadder.

I was gonna say Distortion neck for the power factor, but still similar to the BW I think.

Otherwise for growl, in classic output, I was gonna say A2P. Should still be bright enough in an SG

Don't know where you get mid scooped with a Hybrid? I have had 3 in guitars and they are far from it!! In fact it has a really strong high mid cut to it that is pronounced but not harsh that makes it a great pickup to cut through for solos. In fact no Custom wind I find is lacking mids other than the Custom 5 so??
Yes they have a edge to them but are not overly bright or harsh and I find them to have a nice warmth in the bottom.
Had one in fact in a Modern Player Plus Tele with a Pine body and maple neck and it wasn't overly bright. It's very ballanced and warm in teh bridge on my 96 Carvin DC 400 wit teh Mahogany body and neck and Quilt top as it was in my solid KOA DC 127.
