'59/JB in the Edwards....

Thames

Great White Malice
As some/many of you know, the Edwards E-LP-85SD I bought recently on eBay is real keeper.

It was loaded with 2 of the most popular pickups, but on the other side, 2 pickups that weren't my taste.... I mean, I always found the '59 on the neck slot of a gibson-style guitar too boomy, lacking clarity on the low strings with OD. And the JB, I was afraid, thinking it might be too hot and harsh in the mid-highs, again, for my playing style.

Ok, well, why not ? They are already in there so why dont give 'em a road test ?!

First test : clean settings. I must say that the new Laney tube heads have a really nice, bell ringing clean channel. Nothing comparable to Marshalls. More a cross between Hiwatt and Fender clean. Wow.... the '59 is really singing! In fact, the '59 never sounded so nice in all the other guitars I had. Same adjustment, same 500k pots... Is it the guitar ? The pickup I hated for its "neck-boomyness" in the past, I now love! In OD settings, fabulous too! Thick but airy sweet singing tones, I love it... oh yes!! I can finally use it for rythm w/OD!

Ok! Now the JB... ok its real capabilities arent unleashed on the clean channel, everyone agrees, but with vol/tone both on 7-8, it's a nice, jangly HB. On the other side, with some OD, the JB is thick, singing, where notes literally bloom, almost play by themselves. And really, taming down the vol/tone at 7-8 is really working to achieve PAF tones. Very nice pickup.

So, finally ? What's the conclusion ? I'm going to keep 'em a for some time, was planning to try Dimarzio Virtual PAF, and come back to Seths later :smokin: .... but for now
