I just bought a Gibson SG standard on ebay.....they put a duncan 59 pickup in the bridge. i pulled it out and noticed that it said 59N on it.....is this the neck version?? if so, is there a difference?? Please help!

I believe it is the neck version. The only real difference would be the output level. Neck pickups are a made a little weaker because you have so much more string vibration at that spot. What came in the neck? You could switch it out and buy a 59b or some other PAF style pup for the bridge. Lots of choices out there for you

It's definately the neck version, and there is far more of a difference than just a little less output. A neck pickup in the bridge will sound significantly weaker, thinner, and definately have less output. If you like how it sounds, then there's nothing technically wrong with keeping it there. In fact, alot of people put bridge pickups in the neck. Neck pickups in the bridge aren't as popular, but everyone's tastes are different. However, if you think it sounds too thin, weak, quiet, or in general doesn't sound good, I'd suggest you get the bridge version and either sell off the '59n or stick it in the neck slot.

Yes, a 59N is a neck version. The bridge version is slightly hotter than the neck version.
Not a problem if you are happy it balances with (i.e. is not overpowered by) whatever is in the neck position.
Like yeti says, you could always move the 59N to the neck position and put something else in the bridge slot.

that's what i thought. i've never used a 59 before, and they sound good...but isnt what im looking for. i'll swap it out and put it in the neck position and then get a new bridge pickup. thanks guys!!
