Re: 59 sh1n too boomy in lespaul neck

Try a Pearly Gates neck. It tilts the EQ in all the right directions. Best LP PAF style every IMO. Alternate choice would be a Seth - perhaps a little more even and a little milder than the 59.

Re: 59 sh1n too boomy in lespaul neck

I normally use 59b models in the neck and in my explorer, I had to put an A4 mag in it to tame some of the low end. As said, the Pearly Gates is a great neck pup too

Re: 59 sh1n too boomy in lespaul neck

I just lower the guitar volume for the neck pickup and my 59n clears right up, without losing it's volume much at all.

Lower the bass side of the pickup, or

Jazz neck
Seth neck
Pearly Gates neck
Whole Lotta Humbucker neck
496N
Black Winter neck

Depending on how much boom you want to get rid of and what kind of character and output you want to move to.

Re: 59 sh1n too boomy in lespaul neck

- Drop the bass side of the '59 a little
- Try raising the screws on the pickup up and lowering the whole pickup down a bit

Both will make it sound more clear and reduce bass.

Re: 59 sh1n too boomy in lespaul neck

2 choices: Jazz or Pearly Gates. They have scooped mids like the 59. The PG has more bass than the Jazz, but just a lil more.

Re: 59 sh1n too boomy in lespaul neck

Thanks for all the ideas...i have lowered the pickup as well as individual screws but still boomy and cant go any lower without loosing the sound...i like the magnet idea i have heard that before but im not sure i could do it myself...is it easy ? Seems like im leaning towards pearly gates...it has ben suggested by the guy who sets up my guitar to get a "jb" ?...again a love the pup im looking for same charector less boom

Re: 59 sh1n too boomy in lespaul neck

I use an A8 in them sometimes

I also lower them and raise the poles to balance them out.

Re: 59 sh1n too boomy in lespaul neck

If you want to try magnet swapping, it's easy. A3, 4 or uoa5 will thin out the bass and sound vintage. Also A8 or 9 won't reduce bass but are more aggressive in the mids and so cut more.

The Duncan website will tell you what mag is in each pickup.
You can get mags from mojotone.com.
There are other sites as well...I just can’t think of any atm.

Re: 59 sh1n too boomy in lespaul neck

59 has A5. You can also find mags on ebay. A JB in standard series wiring is a step in the wrong direction because it has a lot of output for bridge position and will be super fat in neck position. It is possible to wire it in parallel and get a good sound, but then it is a jangley single coil ish sound which sounds different than a humbucker in series. The PG would be your best bet as far as a new pup.

Re: 59 sh1n too boomy in lespaul neck

Among pole-pieces, height, and the controls...have never had a 59 with this issue (I've got them in five guitars currently). But then again...I also never got the "scooped mids" thing either...I think that the mids are prominent and killer on these PUPs and it's why I like them. R. Ford and TT-era Henderson used to use them, as does Herring (in his Strats) and all are known for that mid-rich tone. Could be I'm misinterpreting something, but Scott said the same thing, and he knows a bit more than I do.

I guess it depends on what you're comparig to. Thing is, yeah, it balances well with a '59B in the bridge. Drop a JB in the bridge with a '59 in the neck, and the difference is pretty radical.
