'59 with A8... anybody tried?

Oy! Anybody tried to put some A8 in their '59?

My '59 set is installed in the Epi which is tuned in C standard these days. I found the bass response a bit loose and somehow spongy... I think would be a word to describe it.

I believe A8 should focus the lows a bit and throw some highs in bonus... not that I am missing at the moment, but would appreciate the lows tighter.

PS: It has been a while I haven't been around... Hope GAS is not get to me again!

i have not tried it, but i can try and tell u what to expect (i will be making a demon 8 very soon) more mids rolled off highs and tight bass. The A8 will give u some low mids from what i gather, and who doesnt like low mids! Though u do play in C standard so i would assume u would want highs to clear it up. If it still does not work for u try the Demon its very clear.

I'm just guessing here, but the "spongy" bass might be from tuning so low. I have a '59 on my Epi in standard tuning and, while the bass is pronounced, it's not very loose sounding. When I do the "drop D" thing on the low E it, the sound gets more of a flabbiness to it. What gauge strings are you using for that tuning?

Yeah I know, I didn't have this problem when I was tuned in E. But I like the C tuning, it just brings different ideas out of my fingers.

I am using 12-52 with a wound 3rd from D'Addario.

The Epi might not be mahogany either, or not completely but mixed with alder, remembering the memorable post on the subject of Epi Lp and tonewood. And then the mic I use for recording has issue with low frequencies... So I am a bit cumulating here. Thought a change of magnet could help... and is so cheap!!!

I had one in my APH, which I think is the same or at least it is very close to a '59 from a coils standpoint.

There is just some musical quality to A2 and A5 that is missing in A4 and A8. Some overtones get "bitter" like too old coffee.

A8 is also the one alnico that makes the pickup much louder, louder than ceramic (ceramic compresses on hard play, A8 doesn't).

The EQ is good, that's not the problem. But it just doesn't sound right here. A fat awg44 pickup with A8 is a different matter.
