Does anyone out there use an uoa5 mag in a 59b? If so, school me on the +/- of the swap. It's goin' into heavier gib lp studio. My goal is to add some more output while retaining the 59 sweetness. I also have an a3 & a4 mag. Based on some of the reviews i've read the uoa5 might be a better choice. Right?:scratchch Thanks in advance.

The UOA5 '59B is a great PU; lots of rich vintage dynamics. But it has slightly less output than a polished, oriented A5. If output is the top priority, an A8 would be the way to go. But with an UOA5 in the bridge, you can lower the '59N a little to dial back it's volume.

An A4 is also an option. A3's are bright and low output, not what you want. They're mainly for neck PU's.

^^ Hi Blueman!

I did the A5 swap to UOA5. Less output, had to raise the bridge considerably, but I hear a fuller midrange without the sometimes shrill treble on the G and B strings (especially on "crunchy" chords). I removed most of the wax in the pup, and I didn't know if there's a difference; sounds airier, softer bottom, slightly sweeter highs. Sounds like a dirtier version of a Seth Lover bridge in another LP clone of mine. I think it's going to stay in the pup for a long time.

I'll be swapping in a A4 into the neck soon.

HTH.

I agree with all of this.

My experience with UOA5 is that it seems like a slightly degaussed A5......so nice sweet tone, but a tiny bit less output. It made my Custom 5 sound closer to a 59 or Seth.

So if you're going for output, go A8 or Ceramic.

I never liked A4 or A3 in any bridge pickup either. It makes them less organic and ballsy sounding. But that can be good in the neck, when you need an evenly balanced and articulate sound.

I like the UOA5 in the bridge, it just makes the pup much more versatile without going over the top on any 1 frequency. Some mags boost bass, some boost mids, some boost or cut treble, the UOA5 IMO keeps the EQ in a sweet spot so to speak where you can tweak the amp EQ or through in an EQ pedal and the tone is limitless at your disposal. If the output isn`t enough you have the boost ability with an EQ pedal and depending on what you boost and cut on the pedal running the vol boost up can REALLY bring out the best in the pup and the amp.
