'59b with an A8 mag... another verdict

About a month ago I changed the mag in my '59b to an A8 roughcast unpolished mag with LtKojak's recommendation and blueman335's +1 in my LP Studio.

I gotta be completely honest, the P/U sounds amazing. It's got muscle, it's creamy yet defined and tight, and it's got just enough growl. There's a decent midrange growl, and the highs are just right. I've noticed that single note definition cuts through the mix when playing with the band and it breaks up nicely when I roll off the volume. I'm completely in love with my current soloing tone.

I've been using a modded Boss EQ the past two weeks and I've been dialing in even more defined tones since.

Defo recommend this mag swap.

Vault,
I've been thinking of this swap as an option. Did you find the PAF character remained after the swap? One thing I liked about the A5/UOA5 is that, playing close to the bridge, you could pull of some Tele-like tones. Did that remain or did the pickup get too beefy after the swap? This sounds intriguing..............:scared:

I've never consciously played close to the bridge with the intent of pulling off some tele-like tones. I noticed that the '59b with an A5 was really compressed in my LP Studio and quite bright. With the A8 mag, the '50b sounds grittier and more even tonally. When soloing, the strings just sound like their singing; they sound incredible.

That sounds like an A8 alright! :cool2:

Glad you're diggin' it.

Ive done the same and like it alot! Actually was running an 59/8 in the neck and a Custom 8 in the bridge of one of my Washies and it ripped.. The 598 is a lil strong for the neck, but was def a lead screamer..
