59n/C5 revisited!

wow I'm glad I decided to go back to the C5, the C5 actually removes the Issues I had with the 59B. The 59b overall is a very good pickup but in my Les Paul it could get too bright and thin on certain passages.

Decided to throw in the C5 again and all the thin highs are gone and brightness under control but the pickup still has that vintage feel to it which is key to my style these days, the C5 cleans up real nice using the Fulltone OCD and can have a lot of balls when needed! So after a bit of trial and error in my Les Paul the 59N/C5 could be the best I have used ..... I knew I saved this pickup for a reason!

Re: 59n/C5 revisited!

Yup. The good ole C5/59 was my very first set of Duncan pups. I liked them but they weren't exactly right for my Predator. They finally found a happy home in my Genny. They're an outstanding Tele set - especially if one wires the center position to be the screw coil of the 59 with the stud coil of the Custom for a "virtual 3rd hybrid".

I love it. :)

Re: 59n/C5 revisited!

Ive been looking at this combo... I play Classic Rock and Blues, am in several jazz bands (and going to a jazz guitar school in a year), and love to play other music.. Megadeth, Opeth, Coheed And Cambria (which is a tone im going for in a band a friend and I are starting, our first cover is welcome home), and.. new random songs (whatever I like.. metalcore, death metal, classic rock, hard rock.. whenever I find a song I really like).

Plus... I also love good cleans (especially in the bridge, sounds a bit more.. twangy and twinkly to me). Is this a good set for me? *hijacks the thread*

Re: 59n/C5 revisited!

Hmmm....i was thinking of getting a c5. I love my 59b but sometimes i need it to be a bit hotter. I was hoping the c5 was some kind of a hotter 59b.

The C5 is refered to as a 59 on steroids... definitely give it a shot!

Re: 59n/C5 revisited!

The Custom 5 will always be one of my alltime favorite Duncan humbuckers.
I like vintage A5 tone, but need the bass to be tighter and like the added output. I even made my User Group Day pickup an overwound C-5 nickel, just because I had the idea of beefing up it's mids. I use that 15.3 C-5 in my vintage sunburst McCarty with a 59N, and it's great. I think I still like the stock Custom 5's in Les Pauls though. The overwound one sounded a bit too pushed sounding in my LP. I threw a Brobucker in that one, and it's perfect.

Re: 59n/C5 revisited!

Whats up gearjoneser! I know your a die hard C5 user, The C5 is the only one I have saved because it always has a good use. I cant believe I have spent hundreds of dollars on WCR pups when Seyymours are just as goos for a fraction of the cost!

It's weird because with the strong output of the C5 you can still use it on just about any type of music and it cleans up so nicely with your guitars volume knob! anyway I'm glad I kept this bad boy!

I am a big fan of the WCRs. Which ones did you try, and what didn't you like about them? Also, what is it about the C5 that you like above all the others you've tried so far?

Re: 59n/C5 revisited!

I think you can play almost any style of music with the C5/59 and splitters

THE C5 has a beautiful tone when backed off. Sometimes I feel it isn't nasty enough, but the harmonics and clarity make it all worth it.

Consider also the C5/APH1 or C5/PGn and my fave - the C5/Jazz

Re: 59n/C5 revisited!

I'm running a 59/Custom setup in my paul.
How does the C5 compare to the Custom? I'm scared off by everyone saying that its got a big mid scoop... I like my mids!

I'm finding the custom slightly harsh, but I can tame that with my tone knob. I was actually set on the C5... But I previously magnet swapped my Distortion into a JB and didn't like it. I kinda started thinking that A5's don't do it for me, and got the custom instead. But I'm still wondering if I should go with the C5.

Re: 59n/C5 revisited!

The 59n/C5 combo is in my Les Paul. I'm thinking about it for my new SG too.

What can I say, but, for my Les Paul it's MY sound.

I've had a pair of Darkburst, Goodwoods, Black Magic, at first I thought they were good but after a while they just sound dull. The C5 has better low end and just a bigger and fatter tone.

Who knows it could be all the other gear I use that make the WCR's not work out!

Re: 59n/C5 revisited!

I think the term midscoop scares people away from the C5 and midspike scares people away from the JB. In reality, you've just got to determine what the natural sound of the guitar is, and then choose. In mahogany, the C-5, 59B, and Jazz B sound great. They only sound scooped when you put those in hollow sounding guitars. In those guitars, The CC, JB, Seth, and APII work well.

Right, that makes sense. Thanks...
Will probably give it a shot. Gotta get more magnets. =)
