5e3 wattage

Have been looking at the Mission Amp 5e3 kit to build. Fender has reissued their '57 Deluxe amp with a pair of 6V6's @ 12 watts. The '65 Deluxe Reverb (and reissue) also has a pair of 6V6's and is rated at 22 watts. Not sure what the Mission Amp is rated at but why the difference in output with the same type and number of power tubes....I'm obviously missing something.

Re: 5e3 wattage

A Blackface Deluxe is fixed bias at 420 volts on the plates (give or take) a 5E3 Tweed deluxe is mucy less voltahe and set up cathode biased and in that set up a pair of 6V6's produce around 12 or so watts.

I have a 5B4 tweed Super clone (built by Mission amps BTW...) that runs a pair of 6L6's and is only abotu 18-20 watts...a Blackface Super gets 45 watts out of a prir of 6L6's...a late 70's Silverface Pro Reverb gets abotu 70 watts out of a pair of 6L6's...

It's not just abotu the tubes it's also about how you set them up...

As a side note, buy a Mission amp, you will not be let down. nruce is one of the finest amp tech's/builders around...period!

Re: 5e3 wattage

Do you know if Bruce sells kits other than the 5e3. I sent an email a week or so ago and haven't gotten a reply. There's a link to a Crusader and a Soulkicker on his site but nothing comes up when I click the link.

You'd have to contact Bruce directly to see what all he is selling these days. I know he's done all kinds of stuff over the years and it just depends. He recently had surgery on his sholder and he might not be 100% back to work yet...he'll take care of you for sure.

Re: 5e3 wattage

tweed Deluxes are about 12 watts

there's not much value in comparing them to a deluxe reverb - different circuit, different transformers, and they were built for different purposes

I have been playing my Mission 5E3 a lot lately, and I also have an original '56 Deluxe.
If you are going to invest the time to build the kit, you should realize that they are warm crunch amps, known for sustain and harmonics.

Quite a few people build this amp, then complain that there is not enough clean headroom. I have this to say: you built the wrong amp!

however, when used properly, they are one of the best sounding recording and small club blues amps around.

I have seen that a guy on this forum also makes some amps.

Celtic Amps !
Does anyone know how the 5e3 clones sounds that he makes ?
Is $800.00 worth the 12watts that you get ?
I love the 5e3 tone, and would love to get an amp of about 15W that i an use w. my Vox AC15, but $800.00 sounds a wee bit much for my liking !
Any other 5e3's that will not drain my savings ?

Is $800 fair for a tweed Deluxe...that is a question only you can answer after playing one...I try to never look at prices of amps and relate that to wattage. It simply doesn't work that way. I happen to think that a 5E3 Deluxe is one of the greatest amps ever but guys that are after lots of clean headroom or lots of distortion would disagree.

FWIW, the difference in 12 watts and 15 watts is nothing you'd ever notice...you could easily run a tweed Deluxe with an AC-15 with no issues. You CAN NOT hear a watt, it simply can not be done.

If you want 5E3 tone a good clone is the way to go...an original late 50's Tweed Deluxe is around 3k+ these days, even the most high dollar clones out there are a good bit less than that.

On the topic of Celtic amps Scott owns Celtic amps and makes a few amps, the ones I have seen were less than impressive as far as the build quality and really left me wanting more in the tone department, I hate to say that as Scott seems like a stand up guy and I also know that there are several guys here that have and use Celtic amps but to me they are marginal amps built by a hobbiest and it shows.

Now, on the other hand Bruce Collins who owns and runs Mission amps and is one of the best builders and amp techs I've ever known. He built my Super, worked on my 62 Deluxe, 69 Twin Reverb and is soon to get a crack at my 60 model Ampeg Jet...he really is one of the best, right up there with guys like Gerald Weber (Kendrick Amps), Mark Sampson (Matchless, Bad Cat, Star) and Fred Taccone (Divided by 13). He does build clones of amps that seem to be in high demand but he also works on all amps from Crates to Dumbles and also designes his own amps as well.

Thank you very much for the info . . .

. . . the reason sooo many folks (from where i am) would have a problem with $800.00 is that the av. income is round about $600.00 per month before tax deduction :argh:

After all deductions, house, car, kids and what not, you are looking at far less than $100.00 per month. And one must always remember to save for the Christmass holidays, as the kids prefer X-Mass pressies - goes without saying !

Thank
James

Re: 5e3 wattage

James, the Vicky site has some pretty cool 5E3 clips that will get you started for sure. I like the Vicky amps but I feel like personally they are a tad overpriced new...used you can get a deal here and there...however they are very well made!

Re: 5e3 wattage

Check the Richter 5e3 and Little Dwag (there are others as well) options in a 5e3 is in your future.
