5way switch wiring

I have a 5-Way switch for my current project and I can't understand any of the diagrams I look at. Does it matter which way the switch is mounted to hook up the HSH setup?image.jpg
The part you can see with the 4 posts are mounted toward the pups and wiring. Is that correct?

Re: 5way switch wiring

It matters as to how it will fit in the cavity
I wired up a super switch once
and when I went to put it in it would only go in one way
backwards

had to turn it round
swap all the wires on it

so yes
the answer is yes it does

take your time
look it over

think about what you are doing
measure twice.....

you know be careful
don't cuss out loud if you hork it up

Re: 5way switch wiring

Does anyone have a CLEAR picture of their 5 way switch in their start where I can tell which way is correctly installed.

Hi Ed. The wire that I have highlighted if you can see it. Is it necessary to go between both common points on the switch or not?image.jpg

Re: 5way switch wiring

Ok. I wire up my components and switch tonight. All went great. I plug my guitar in and check it,.........it has an unbearable squeal. It sounds like a pig. I know it's not the pups. Everything was wired going by this diagram. EVERYTHING EXCEPT THE JUMPER BETWEEN BOTH COMMONS ON THE SWITCH. All connections are on one side. All grounds are connected. I put a stereo jack in for some actives or LEDs down the road, not sure if that would cause this. Any ideas guys/gals. I'm lost now. *****On a side note: the pickups used were an ibanez set. They had 3 conductors. White-HOT, Red-COIL TAP, and Black- GROUND. Going from what I've read online about the color code they use. The red wired was not used on this application and left unhooked I the cavity. image.jpg

Re: 5way switch wiring

only if you're using both sides of the switch ...

... to carry audio signals.

i visualize the switch as 2 independent switches.

+1

On, for example, a HSH Superstrat with MV and MT controls, the second pole might be used to automate coil splitting. In this case, you certainly would not want to interconnect the Common terminals of the two poles.

Ok. Im at a loss of why this guitar has the feedback it does now....My humbuckers are mounted on an aluminum pickgaurd but i had single coils mounted on it before. There is feedback on all positions of the switch even when the tone is rolled completely off there is still a hum. Everything is grounded to the volume pot and also a ground going to the tremolo plate from the volume pot. Stereo jack was installed, just with nothing hooked to the hot side of the stereo jack if that helps.

are you sure the pickups are not at fault.. ?

we might have to see a pic of your wiring adventure as well..no offense but it very well could be your wiring job if you are inexperienced in wiring guitars...is possible that something might be in error with your wiring .. hey ,it happens to people with experience from time to time too.. when i do electronics work, I always use 2.5x reading glasses and a bright lamp, so i can clearly see all the wiring connections.. you would be surprised at what you catch with a magnified inspection

possibly could of smoked a component in the process of wiring.. meh.. it happens

lastly.. small chance the stereo jack might be at fault..

troubleshooting time..a process of elimination ,of possible causes

When I get around to the time again, i can take the pickguard off and take a couple pics of the wiring and post them...Could it be that the .47 capacitor i put on got to hot and is causing this issue?

as i said.. troubleshooting is a process of elimination.. disconnect the tone pot/cap from the volume pot.. if the problem stops, you know the answer.. if not.. keep it disconnected and keep looking

edit>> this is how i would work the problem.
