6 way switching

Has anyone installed a 6 way switch to a twin humbucker guitar?
I am thinking of one for my ec1000 with a JB/59 set.
I assume the switch is rotary but what kind of pickup options will it give and how much work (extra wiring) is required?

Re: 6 way switching

The 6 way toggle is abysmal. Very flimsy.the new 6 way blade is perfectly fine.

Re: 6 way switching

I remember a thread 10 yrs ago about the 6 way Freeway switch
But not any real world review of how it worked out
It was kinda new back then

Re: 6 way switching

Link to what? A review? I just gave you mine, haha.

The Freeway toggle is just fairly week and finnicky to solder, IMHO. Because of its design. It has 2 paths of 3 positions, like a gearshift in a car. That mechanism isn't really strong.

The 6 way blade is simply made by oak, like the usual 5 ways. These are fine. Allparts sells them.

Re: 6 way switching

I have a 6pos 4pole rotary in a guitar with an humbucker and a P-90, and it works really well. You have to get used to putting the switch in the correct position but its not too difficult. The pickups I have tap one coil of the humbucker so its not truly split just a lower output on one coil to make it sound thicker than a normal split humbucker. The winder is a forum bro and he calls it splat.

That's cool - I have had Guitars with a lot of wiring options etc.-
I have even tried stacks with a switch to throw the two coils of the stack in parallel with each other- very transparent and super 'quacky' in almost any combination...even with a Humbucker= fat quack ('Mainiac ' by Michael Sembello for example ).

But the one thing I have never tried is humbuckers in series with each other for a phatt Jazzy Sound - does it work well for that ?

I like the idea of a 6 way

The way I have it set up is the bridge splat or split for other pickups and the p-90 is tapped to vintage output. While in series its actually hotter than the full humbucker so its great for a boost and for solos. I personally wouldn't do it with 2 humbucker just because of the volume jump. But 2 pickups in series is a really cool sound. It gives you the fatness of the neck with the bite of the bridge and pushes the amp a bit harder.

Re: 6 way switching

I hadn't heard about these switches. Interesting, as I always try to get fewer options that I will actually use. I use the switches a lot on my guitars, and I could possibly get it down to 3 positions, providing those are the right positions.

Re: 6 way switching

Triple shots take several motions to go from neck humbucker to both pickups on single coil

The switch has are small I'd hate to try it in the middle of a tune

Be real nice to just swing a single switch to some position

Re: 6 way switching

Heck, I get lost on a five-way switch! I spent years trying every wiring configuration I could find, and one of them did have a six-way rotary switch. That one offered a lot of tones but was a nightmare on stage. Eventually I came around to just using a blender pot on Strats, and most of my Les Pauls are wired normal. I do have one that I set up with the Jimmy Page Humbuckers from Hell schematic, and it is very useful in live situations.
