60 watt amp, 50 watt speaker

I have a 60 watt '83 Rivera Era Fender Concert.

I want to switch out the speaker, but the speakers that I have on-hand or would consider getting (Weber 12F150, Emi Cannabis Rex) are only 50 watts, when the amp is rated at 60 watts.

Would the speakers likely be ok, or do I really need to find something rated appropriately?

If I should get something rated higher, what should I get? Thinking about Weber Silver Bell 75w.

they should be ok. you could blow them, but if you are turning a 60 watt amp up until power tube distortion, you should get more speakers if you need more volume.

Re: 60 watt amp, 50 watt speaker

You can blow a 100+ watt speaker with a 60 watt amp...there are a lot of variables.

I almost always suggest twice the wattage for the speaker compared to the amp. Some think it's overkill but better safe than sorry.

Some people like the tone of running speakers closer to their rated wattages, like the AC30 with 15 watt Celestion Blues. It all depends on how it's used, too. That said, I have a 30 watt and a 60 watt speaker in my Vox.

Re: 60 watt amp, 50 watt speaker

That's what I was going to contribute... I had the Celestion 12" in my HRDx and it broke up early and fuzzed our pretty quickly... I did't want the amp itself to do anything but Pristine Clean and a little bit of reverv... I picked up a Cali, I think it was, from a WEBER site that was referred to my by one of our fellow form members... Just adding the speaker with 40W more rating gave the amp some room to breathe and LOTS of headroom...

Good Luck, either way!

My 15 watt gkoelling has a 30 watt Black Mountain and my Gries 35 has a 150 watt Swamp Thang. They sound great and I don't have to worry about blowing them.

If the Concert were mine, I'd buy a higher rated speaker but the choice is yours. I just wouldn't push the 50 watter very hard at all.

I like the EVM or the EV Force speaker with these amps. I had a Fender 75 amp head with a 112 EV Force--great sounding rig.

will it work? yes it will. will it break up early? yes it will. If you talk to speaker snobs there's somthing like signal compression that runs with the signal that drives the speaker harder or if its weak-doesnt drive it hard enough. It sounds like in this situation your amp will push the speaker better at lower volumns but fuzz it out at higher volumns.

Re: 60 watt amp, 50 watt speaker

It all depends on how loud you run the amp, on an average basis. Speakers are pretty durable devices, even when overdriven for brief periods, but can burn out if subjected to a substantial overload for a longer time. If you run your amp normally around 20 to 40 watts (which is quite loud, depending on the venue), you'd be fine, but running it at full power stage clipping for awhile would probably damage the speakers, since an amp into power clipping shows as more apparent power to the speaker.

Re: 60 watt amp, 50 watt speaker

I ran it for a little while, but the speaker started smelling hot.

Will look for something else. Trying to decide between Weber Chicago (higher powered 12F150, ie C12N) or maybe a Silver Bell (Celestion type G12H30 or Greenback type).

Thoughts?
