65 bassman

Hello,
This is my 65 bassman month of october. As near as I can tell by the schematic and layout it is an AA864. The bass channel uses different value pots than the aa165 and ab165 and the schematic is a bit different. That said it obviously has some transplanted orange drops and while I am not a huge believer in massive tone differences in caps of the same value, the 2 smaller caps are the wrong value in the second picture. They are both .033 and should be .047 and .1. That said, can someone she'd light on the tone change made by the value change and if I put it back to the stock value, what caps would you all recommend.

Re: 65 bassman

.047 and .1 are typical bf/sf fender tone stack caps. marshall used .022 for both. changing the caps moves the frequencies up which isnt necessarily a bad thing, should sound a little less scooped. i run a .047 and .022 in my '66 deluxe reverb and love it

Re: 65 bassman

It is a great sounding amp. Bright down for single coils, bright up for buckers. What is the benefit of splitting the values like what you have and the original. Mine are both .033. I'm not looking to make changes just get a little education.

Also, what power tubes do you guys recommend for this head. It has mullard RI 6l6 in it, I tried some sovtek....bleh. flat. The mallards are very clear and seem to have good harmonics. Tried some gt 6l6 chp....red plated with the bias all the way down. Trashed those. Running the mallards at 30.

Re: 65 bassman

the .1 is the bass cap, the .047 is the mid cap. by changing them you are shelving up the frequencies each control influences most.

i use gt 6l6 ge's in my dual showman reverb. when i had a bassman i ran tad 6L6WGC-STR and was very happy with them. there are plenty of good 6l6gc tubes out there depending on what you are looking for

Re: 65 bassman

those look really nice. i havent had to buy a set of 6l6gc in a while since i mostly gig my 6v6 amps. i did prefer the tad wgc vs the gc but id be very willing to give these a try
