7 String Suggestions?

Ok, it's an Ibanez RG7421. Bolt-on maple neck, rosewood board, basswood body, hardtail Fender style bridge. It's gonna be a 1 hum in the bridge, 1 vol knob, used 95% of the time for high gain metal rhythm playing. A decent clean tone would be ok, but one step above "useless" would be sufficient :)

I'm leaning towards a Custom. Any input?

Re: 7 String Suggestions?

I've got a Custom in my RG1527. It sounds like it would do what you you're wanting. It stays clear under high gain, nice and articulate, decent harmonics. If i had to do it over again, I might have gone for a Distortion-7. But hey, you know me....

Re: 7 String Suggestions?

The Distortion is pretty high on the list, but I've never tried a Custom, so I figured I'd start there, and swap it for a Distortion if I'm not happy.

Re: 7 String Suggestions?

I've been thinking about swapping my Custom for a Distortion. I'm not sure on the RG7421, but on my 1527, I had to modify the pickups a little to fit them in the route. I had to clip the ends of the pole pieces and round off the dog ear mounting pieces. Check into that on yours. If you're set on a Custom, I might be willing to yank mine out and go for a Distortion. Get back to me and I'll think about it.

Re: 7 String Suggestions?

They don't make 7 string parallel axis.

And I really don't want to eat or blow any asses :)

Would a 7 string JB be a bit too weak for your playing style?

Re: 7 String Suggestions?

I have a C5 in my Schecter Omen 7. Similar set up as the Ibanez- maple neck, basswood body, rosewood fretboard. Tonewise, I find it a little bright and trebly. There's a bit of a pronounced "sizzle" to the high end. It is quite good at cutting thru the mix in a live situation, though. Nice harmonics, and a not-too-hot output. What kind of amp do you have? If you have a high gain modern amp, and you dial it in with tons of gain from the amp, I think you can get by with a JB. If you prefer to get your gain from the pup, go with the distortion.

Re: 7 String Suggestions?

I think a live wire metal 7-string pickup should be invented ;-)
But then you can't use the 5% for clean stuff ;-)
I would suggest a Distortion, Custom or JB.
An Invader sounds too muddy and mushy in my ears.

Emg 707 ?

I've almost bought one (or the "new" 81-7 :) ) a bunch of times, but I like to swap pups way too much to chop up the guitar just to fit the EMG.

It seems like sometime in the last year, somebody got a Custom Shop quote for a Live Wire Metal 7, and it was close to $300 :saeek:
I'm honestly they don't offer that as a production model, seeing how popular EMGs 7 string pups are.
