'72 Telecaster Deluxe Pickups?

Am I wrong? The humbuckers in a Fender '72 Deluxe Reissue look larger than a standard humbucker. I'd like to get one of these beasts and eventually replace the Fender stock p-ups with some nicer boutique ones.

Maybe I'm looking in the wrong spot on the web site, OR Seymour Duncan does not make a larger humbucker for these types of guitars?

I would LOOOVE to be wrong.

DOES S.D. make a pickup that will work or is there another company that does?!?

I'd love to know before I spend what little money I have on this guitar.

Many thanks,

Thor

I believe they are.. duckbuckers, or something.. quacky.. erm... I think they are bigger.

Re: '72 Telecaster Deluxe Pickups?

I have a 72 Tele Custom which used the same pickup as far as I know. I installed a Dimarrzio years ago and made a cheap little plastic square-ring (is that an oxymoron?) to cover the gap. Later when I had it worked on the tech made a nicer one for it. I recently replaced the Dimarrzio with a SD Jazz Humbucker and couldn't be more please with it. I have a Jerry Donahue that I just got to replace the bridge pickup. Wired the Jazz with the three way switching and then have the bridge wired to a phase switch so I can get a strat in-between type sound. That gives me a 10 different tones!

Yeah, the only way to get one would be getting a Rio Grande' or just sending the 72 tele pup to seymour for reworking/re-wiring/pole replacment etc. Thats what i'm going to do

Before you do anything with that guitar, give those pickups a chance. They were designed by Seth Lover and the ones I've played sounded pretty cool . . .

Re: '72 Telecaster Deluxe Pickups?

Yeah,The only replacement pu that will fit perfect is the rio grande 72`big bottom set:)
I have both stock and the muy grande (mg72hb) bridge hb`s but i`m thinking of getting a pickguard that will fit a SD trembucker. I think warmoth makes them.
the reason for not using a plastic ring is the "low" hardtail bridge,i won`t be able to adjust the pu "hight" enough that way:)

Re: '72 Telecaster Deluxe Pickups?

I also have a '72 Tele Deluxe. I found the stock pickups to be so-so, but they were a little too mellow for my tastes.

Seymour Duncan does not make any pickups in the same dimensions as the Fender Wide-Ranges. So what I did was, researched what kind of pickups I needed. If you do decide to go with SDs, you will need to get a Trembucker for the bridge, and a regular sized pup for the neck.

Then I traced my old pickguard, factored in the dimensions for the SD pickups (dimensions can be found on the website), and had a guy cut me a new custom pickguard to fit the SD pups. I then installed new 500k pots for the volume and tone controls, as well as a couple other wiring mods.

Now, this guitar is better than I could have ever imagined. The Custom in the bridge position on this axe...is...just ****in perfect. I'm still not totally sold on my Pearly Gates in the neck, but it's good enough for now.

Going for the all-out custom route like I did, requires a lot of patience, research, and cash, but it was all worth it. Now I have a guitar that nobody else has, and it is quite a beast.

Good luck in your quest for tone.

 WOW!

This has been a good collection of thought-provoking replies. I am grateful to all who took the time to write to me.

I am most grateful to a member of SD company who encouraged me to try the pickups first. VERY honest and forthright. Most companies and their peeps try to wring some $ out of you.

What you DON'T know, is that I plan to replace my strat pickups in September (new job...better pay!) and it WILL be Seymour Duncan that I work with. At least I know they have some honest employees.

Muchas Gracias.

Pleasantly surprised and ever a fan,

Thor:bowdown:
