'76 Hiwatt dr103 removing two power tubes ohm question

Hi everybody!

I went to the amp repair shop to do a general quick checkup of my beloved amp. I inted to use it at home in a homemade soundproof cabinet. The speaker I have in here is an 8ohm Eminence C Rex. I currently use it with my Ampeg GVT 5w head, which is awesome for crunch tones by the way.

The guy at the shop told me that I can remove the two inner power tubes to reduce the power (it will make my 100w head into a 50w head, for better or for worse, I know it won't make a real DB difference but that way I know that if I crank the amp - which I never will anyway - I won't necessarily blow the speaker.)

But he told me that because I took two of the four power tubes off, I should set the amp impedance to 16 ohm, even if my speaker is 8 ohm. I was told the opposite by other sources (4ohm on the amp)

Is he right or not? It's such a valuable amp I won't even try anything if I'm not a 100 percent sure it's safe.

Thanks very much in advance for any advice!

Louis
