78' custom in a PRS Custom 24?

Hi guys,

I currently have a Custom 5 in the bridge of my Custom 24. What could I expect
from a '78 in that guitar? Other pick up suggestions welcome.

First question: How old is the PRS?

The pickup cavities of early PRS Custom guitars were routed to accept uncovered humbuckers. The squared off edges of a metal HB cover will foul the rounded corners of the cavity.

It's a 2011 model.

Any idea how the 78' compares to the EVH version Eddie has out there now?

the 78 is the pup that was made BEFORE ed put a floyd rose trem on his guitars, the EVH frankie pup is the pup seymour made for him after the floyd to thicken the tone, the prototype was really close to a stock CC but over the years the magnet aged and the pup got slightly damaged from touring and abuse so you are basically hearing
1st record is the SH5 in frank and IMHO the destroyer since they sound so much alike, second record is the 78,third also 78 and stock ibanez super 70's on a borrowed destroyer, fair warning is a combo of les paul and frankie with the SH5 with a mag swap to alnico II and the CC was born. these tracks have the floyd rose and required edd to get a fuller tone pup with a smoother top(A2 from the ceramic in the SH5) diver down is a mystery, some think he went back to the 78 and some say it is the hybrid?

I know it's been a while but I am trying the same thing. Is this what you did? I want to try the '78 in my Custom 24. Any results?

Wow old post of mine! OK, so I ended up opting for the EVH Frankenstein humbucker. It was a good pup but I ended up not keeping it. I found it too bright. The pickups I'd like in my Custom 24 the most were:
PRS 59/09
Suhr SSH+
SD Custom 5

a5 doesnt work in mahogany? says who? i think a5 can work great in mahogany

Re: 78' custom in a PRS Custom 24?

I've never heard anyone say A5 doesn't work in mahogany. I've heard some say the JB doesn't do well in mahogany, but my experience has been different. (Full disclosure: only one of my JBs is in an all-mahogany axe, so my sample size is limited to that one.) Anyway the general consensus seems to be that the JB is touchy only in certain individual instruments, not in all mahogs.

A5 has been the most-used pickup magnet for fifty years and I'd be quite surprised if a majority of mahogany guitars in existence today didn't have A5 pickups.
