Was it the fact they used rough-cast mags or were the mags sourced from a certain country/supplier? I know they are all now smooth cast but are they now made in China?

I don’t know when or if there was a firm line between RC and smooth magnets. I personally have only found smooth in my older pickups.

I can tell you that I much prefer the Antiquity version of the JB and if you swap in a RC magent to a production JB, you get a very similar tone as the Antiquity.
