‘97 Gibson SG Special

Someone offered me a ‘97 SG Special, black, stock everything, decent condition, for both of my Squier guitars (CV Tele, VM Jag). Gotta drive a good way to meet, but seems like a good deal.

Are these notoriously crappy or anything?

Sounds like a good trade to me.
I’m not aware of any particular issues with the SG from that era.

Considering used market values, its a beneficial trade for you, if the SG is in nice shape and truly all original.

But if you like the two Squiers more than you like the SG, then don't do it. Don't do the trade just because it's a "no brainer" value-wise.

I’m more in the market for an old Ibanez RG550 or 570, but figure the SG will be better trade bait for that.

Damn, that's sweet. For the two Squiers, I would keep that sweet SG, and slap some pickup covers and some double ring keystones on. You can get an RG any time...but when can you trade two cheap-o guitars for a nice American made Gibson from a decent period in the company's history? Look at that thing. The ABR-1 puts it over the top (no conversion required)...and since it has a guard, it could easily be converted "back" to P90's (even though it came with the humbuckers originally).

I have the same ax it is a freaking beast. They need a truss tweak here and there but besides that, they are rtock solid rock machines. Enjoy!

I will say this.....I love sg's I had 3 of them. But they are hard as hell to get rid of. Most likely the reason you are being offered it as trade. I couldn't sell any of mine and ended up trading them off one by one for something that I could sell. I dont understand it either and it could be a regional phenomenon

I have had a few '97's...one was a black Special....'97 seemed to be a good year, as I've had many others too. The rosewood boards were generally very dark in those years which to me is a real plus too. Do it! Good trade for you if the guitar is in decent original condition. Then throw some chrome covers on it!

I have 2 SG standards and a Special. For some reason the special is the one that I always grab.

I'm waiting to hear back from the dude with the SG. The pain in the ass about this is we live almost 5 hours apart, but the more I think about it, I think it's worth a drive.

What pickups do you guys like in your SGs? Stock is 490r/490t, right? I have the stock '62, so I'd rather go for something a little more modern in this one. Used to like the Distortion a lot, but that pickup does not get along with my Super Reverb (icepick city). Since I'll probably never buy an Ibanez Universe, maybe a pair of green DiMarzios, like a Norton and a PAF Pro or something?
