A '59 with a Alnico II magnet

I have A2, A3, A4, A5, and UOA5 magnets all sitting in my box. I'm kind of leaning in the direction of A3. Doesn't A4 have the flattest EQ of all of them? Not sure I want that.

I had an A4 in a '59 neck for quite a while...I eventually found it too dark still and changed to A3 which has been there for quite a while now.

So are you talking about the 59 set? You could try A2 in the bridge, A3 in the neck. A2 will make the bridge less bright. A3 won't be any less warm, but it fills in the mids and might feel less woofy. It's also the weakest mag and can help the set balance better.

That's what I was thinking also. A2 in the bridge with an A3 in the neck. But I may just try the stock '59 neck the way it is and see if it's too boomy in my particular Les Paul.

How close is the A3 in tone to an A5 in a '59? I really like the sounds I get from my '59 stock, but want a little bit less power.

IME each magnet type results in a slightly different sound and EQ curve. Part of why Duncan can market the same coil with a different mag as a completely different pickup. There isn't such a thing as changing a magnet and having only the volume/output change.

A3 sounds like a snappier A2 in the neck. It does drop the output.

Want to try A4 and A3 in the neck of my 59 soon. sounds really promising. it doesn't sound bad and i have the boom mostly under control, but i think there is some singing quality missing and i guess it's just because it's a tad too scooped. But also got the WLH neck waiting for a righteous place.
