A '97 LP body for 600$. Is this guy legit?

Legal and is he real? Yes.

Is what he's doing going to get him into huge **** with Gibson if he's a dealer? Yup.

Re: A '97 LP body for 600$. Is this guy legit?

He's buying Gibson guitars and parting them out, I can't see anything illegal about that.

the only trouble he can get in is with Gibson, and that's only if he's a dealer.

Buying a good guitar for 2K and selling its parts for 500? How can that be profitable?

He's probably not buying them new, and after parting out every bit of a guitar, you usually make more than what you paid for 'em.

Much like everything else. A car is worth more as parts, as is a computer. Things are repaired and restored much more than they're bought new.

That body he has on sale is something I would jump on. Good for a funky refin.

I can't recall if it was this seller that I was speaking to before or not (there are several of them on eBay doing just this), but he said that he has NEVER lost money on a guitar that he's parted out.

The seller I spoke to was buying either complete guitars on eBay or used shops, but had just gotten enough of a war chest built up that he was buying more "in demand" models, like EJ Strats, JM Strats, etc., new from online retailers or GC and then just sitting down with a couple of screwdrivers, a backdrop and a digital camera. He said that he sells EVERYTHING, including the cases, the case candy, screws, knobs, and then he decides to either part out the pickups from the harnesses or pickguards, sell the neckplates with or without the necks...literally thousands of combinations.

He said that he probably gets over $2k for a $1,500 guitar on a bad day.

Sad in many ways, but true. There will always be people looking for projects, fixer-uppers or even that missing part who will pay good money for them.

Well, Gibson reissues only go so far for players, some just want actual parts and such.

Its a 12 year old body! Les Paul standards were about $900-1200 back then right??
Old + used+ GIBSON= CHA CHING!!!

At 3% per year, 900$ 1996 should be 1600$ today, so it's not that much of a difference.

Are they parted, or cannibalized?

I'm not a luthier, but it still looks to me as if the neck's been re-glued here ...

and here ...

If that's correct, then this guy takes broken guitars and couples unbroken necks to unbroken bodies. This means that the serial no.'s got no meaning, and that unless he's a real good luthier, these guitars are at least questionable.

What do you think? Are these indeed re-glued?

They could possibly be reglued necks, but I doubt someone would go through that amount of trouble for a few hundred bucks.

Judging by the amount of finish damage on both accounts, I'm going to guess stress joints that are increased in appearance by a harsh flash.

by the time you buy electronics and all the hardware, assemble it all, I'd say you're really not saving any money at all for what you can find one on craigslist for

Re: A '97 LP body for 600$. Is this guy legit?

he's like the gibson version of reliablefender! In all seriousness though, if he is a Gibson dealer, and he is parting out new guitars that haven't been sold for his own profit, I would favor Gibson going after him for the money they're owed for the guitar itself. I'm not sure how it works with Gibson, but I know with a lot of car dealerships, if a dealership doesn't sell the car in a certain # of days, then the company that manufactures the car can and will repo the car to recoup its losses and that hurts the dealership. If Gibson works like this, I hope they put this guy out of business for parting what seem to be new guitars. If they're old and were bought by this seller as USED equipment, then he's free to do as he wishes with these guitars.

These aren't new Gibsons. They are previously sold, no warranty items.
