A/B/Y boxes

Hey,

So I'm looking for some help from the folks here, form whom I've gotten so much help in the past. I'm getting to the point where I'll be playing live rather regularly, and want to get an A/B/Y box for obvious reasons. I've never had one, and I'm not really too sure what makes one much better than another unless one's very noisy, has signal bleed, physically unstable/weak, or the switches you step down on are too close together.

From my cursory investigation of the internets, Startouch Pedals seem a happy compromise between price and reliability if you trust the company and a few odd reviews. Anyone have any experience with these, or others that are under $100 and good?

Thanks,
Jacob

Re: A/B/Y boxes

Mate, I just ordered a startouch A/b/y box. Startouch were amazingly easy to deal with, I sent an email with a few question and they answered it within a day. There customer service is top shelf. My pedal should here at some stage this week, so when it arrives I'll be happy to let you know how it goes if you like. Im not envisaging any problems, an a/b/y box seems like a pretty simple box really.

Cheers

Thanks man.

One of the biggest things would be getting one that lasts, but besides that, I'd be interested in if there are any differences in sound when you do this:

Plug straight into your amp, then plug into the ABY, choose Y, but still only play through that one amp.

One common complaint I've heard is that on the Y setting you lose definition and high-end.

Re: A/B/Y boxes

I've heard that to, but as I see it, it can't really be the fault of the a/b box. Its more to do with splitting your signal, i think you would have the same difference in tone if you were to use a simple Y cable. Basically one guitar 'powering' 2 amps. I'm sure someone here with more electronical knowledge than me (thats most of you) could chime in and explain the physics of it all.

But when I get and test it out, i'll definitly let you know.

Re: A/B/Y boxes

I can tell you what NOT to get the ART AB/Y box is a piece of junk! the signal bleed is so bad its worthless , the b selector stopped working about the 3rd time I stepped on it and then the switch physically broke, no I wasnt stomping on it...but I should have, I tried going cheap and u know what they say...you get what you pay for
I bought another cheap one...I havent tried it yet ,its a RFX ? it is tiny and it has a cool little made in china sticker on the back...I dont expect much ,but i will be working on a pedalboard this weekend..so I will let you know

Re: A/B/Y boxes

Well my Startouch A/b/y pedal arrived today, ive spent the last couple of hours or so playing through it. Put simply, its tops.

Im using to split my signal between my fender and marshall amp. between guitar and A/B box i have a tubescreamer and wah. If it wasn't for the fact that I had 2 amps going, I wouldnt know it was there. The A/B box makes NO difference to my sound that I can hear. I've compared it every which way and it makes no difference. The one noticable thing is that you can hear the buttons click, not through the amp, but when you switch between settings the button is solid enough that it makes a click that you can hear. Its a small thing but, and when you have 2 amps going at moderate volume you can only just hear it.

I am more than happy with this new addition to my board. Having 2 amps going fattens up sound no end.

any other questions Jacob, and id be happy to try and answer em for you.

Well, I dunno what more I could ask for than it being completely unnoticeable. I think I'll order it.

Thanks man,

Re: A/B/Y boxes

I've been using a Whirlwind ABY pedal and it's heavy duty, quiet and you can pick one up for around $60 to 80 used.

Re: A/B/Y boxes

I currently use a Morley A/B/Y and I don't notice any tone issues with it. I thought the Radial Big Shot sounded fine clean, but it sounded like I head a blanket over my amp when playing dirty.
