i was talking to one of my best female friends out there, showing her my guitar, and she told me to come look at her piece of **** all broken up guitar she had at home.

i go in, open a dust covered case, and what do i see?? a in very good condition Gibson J160-E, very good condition, but with 2 strings broken, the nut is kinda messed, and frets are really worn down. which is why she called it a piece of **** guitar!!!

i went crazy. i slapped some new strings on, started playing it, its beautiful!! gonna try and fix things up more and more this weekend, try plug her in see how she sounds (probably hasn't been plugged in in 50 years) new nut, bridge, i'll see what i can do for her.

only thing i thought was weird was, no serial #, no sticker or anythign on the inside, and the Gibson inlay on top has a black trim around it (its not on the conventional black headstock color, its natural color headstock.

Pics! That's cool though dude. You should buy it off her, and give her a fair price. You both win!

Re: a banged up piece of $%@!!!!!

Plug her in, but don't forget to take care of the guitar too.

Re: a banged up piece of $%@!!!!!

Your friend is right.

That guitar is crap.

You should sell it to me... :nervous:

:9::laugh2: That's what I thought too!!!
Shame shame on us both...:D

Still, great find, ask her if she would part ways with it and give her a fair price for it, after all she is your best female friend, right?

Re: a banged up piece of $%@!!!!!

Pierre you said exactly what I wanted to say...although I was terribly late on the trigger...

Re: a banged up piece of $%@!!!!!

its her only guitar, so its hard to buy it off of her, plus it holds family sentimental values.
i would buy her off, but money is an issue for me right now.

i'd plug her in, but money is an issue... haha no jk, i would, but we've pretty much made it clear that we're mostly just friends. nothing a :friday: cant fix

Re: a banged up piece of $%@!!!!!

Uh....was a pup added or is the 50 years thing just an expression? Pretty sure the J160 didn't have pups in 1957....

i was exagerating when i said 50 year old. not sure how old it is, i emailed gibson yesterday telling them the descriptions of it all.

at first glance i thought the neck was screwed on where the fretboard ends on the body side of it, but after looking a bit i saw that it was just the polepieces sticking through. (the cover or ring or watever seems to have been taken off)

Re: a banged up piece of $%@!!!!!

That's the polepieces of a P90 coil at the end of the fingerboard...there was no cover.

Re: a banged up piece of $%@!!!!!

Well here's what you do man.

Find the money somewhere to buy a used acoustic guitar. Then bring it to her and offer to trade. Tell her you "like these neat old guitars" and say it would be a good "project" for you to work on.

And remember, poker face. You don't want her thinking it's worth anything.

That's how I got my 1965 Fender Deluxe Reverb for 300 bucks.

"I like these old amps"..."It's kind of neat"..."It would be a good project"...

J-160E always had a pickup. E for "electric."

That feedback and the riff at the beginning of the Beatles "I Feel Fine..." That's the J-160E.

Yeah!!

Don't let those "ethics" get in the way of a good score!!

Re: a banged up piece of $%@!!!!!

You can tell her that it really is a piece of junk and buy it cheaply.:firedevil:joke: That's WAY too evil...

Good luck with the process, anyway.;)

Re: a banged up piece of $%@!!!!!

we'll, i made the mistake of going OMFG YOUR AN IDIOT!!! when she opened up the case, and later on that night i told her it was worth a few k's, and she was like OMG NO WAY!!! so ya, thats not gonna happen haha. i guess i'll just fix it up, and if she feels generous i'll find it on my front door some sunday afternoon. (she knows my obsession with guitars)
