A Bigsby that Finally Stays in Tune!

My search is over. The Gretsch stays in tune even after working the bigsby for a while. I sat here for a long time this evening just working it over and over and over. Strings are stretched, locking tuners have to be helping as well. But, I'm diggin it. Finally.

Gotta like that nice, smooth, Bigsby trem on a Gretsch!

Cool beans, Scott.

Just one question: What kind of bridge is on your Gretsch? Is it a roller, tune-o-matic, Melita, or is it something else?

Re: A Bigsby that Finally Stays in Tune!

It's a tuneomatic, on rosewood, pinned in place. It's got the grooves cut different that I've ever seen before. Like a flange is the best way I can describe it. It has a lot to do with the lack of pinching and keeping that bigsby in tune. The nut slots seem to be filed a touch wider than normal.

I'm completely in the honeymoon period, but wow. This thing has tone to the bone. I'm in love. Just sitting here all evening playing it unplugged. If USA Fenders and Gibsons are Cadillacs, this Gretsch is a Lexus.

There are three steerheads on the inlays, two fence boards, three cacti and they're all different artwork (scrimshaw on some beautiful mop, maybe synthetic, but aged beautifully)

The strap "locks" are knurled knob type things that screw off, letting you put on the strap then screw down the knob on it. It's not quite a lock as the knobs can obviously work themselves loose I'd imagine. But with a little locktite, assuming you wanted to leave your strap on all the time, it'lll probably stay on well.

I'm really looking forward to playing this thing at home through some amps, first up b Bents' Aislin 6L6 15 that is still on the bench.

Good catch. I love Gretsches, I have yet to play one that I would consider downright bad. Even though some have Bigsby issues. They are loud too, even unplugged (even the Duo Jets, which are only chambered). I could hear it in a store full of kids playing smells like teen spirit on marshall stacks, and I was unplugged. I'd barely ever turn my amp on for home practice if I owned one..

If that's not enough, it's said that replacing the spring with a Chevy valve spring improves tuning stability. The guy who told me that is a NYC studio cat and Hamer endorsee so I figure he must have some idea of what he's talking about. :)
