my LP badly needs a fret job. i'm undecided as to whether to take it to "the city" for repair, and after the amount of tweaking i've done with the PGn and PGP set in there i'm reluctant to take it offline.
but i badly needed a daily driver/beater/test-bed.
i'd decided previously that the soapbar SE needs a full re-wire, pickup/magnet changes and invasive nut surgery; BC Rich aren't responding to my requests for info on the evil edge mockingbird's electronics and spare parts; and i also received a demon/A2Pn hybrid back from a famous crusty brother not too long ago, which i needed to test.
so the cheapest, nastiest, and most favoured guitar i own gets pulled out of storage, wiped, off, re-assembled, re-wired, and fitted with the crustybucker prototype in the neck and a JB8 trembucker in the bridge (a 500T was on stand-by, after reading basswood recommendation threads).
very happy with this combo, and all i've done is raise the action to around standard (it was fretting out badly at first) and eyeball the pickup height before plugging it into a nighttrain 15W head and a crate V30 quad.
the crusty hybrid wasn't sound-tested before being wrapped in red and green bubblewrap and sent south around festivus, so when neil didn't love it i was filled with fear. thankfully i'm thinking it's just a case of the demon coil dominating, due to having the screws raised for use with a cover.
i believe neil said he swapped out the "de-gaussed" A5 for an A4 or another A5; in it's current form it's very quiet, very loud, a bit too hairy re the demonic imbalance, and very bassy despite being a long way away from the strings. so an a2 mag could be in order. i may even weaken it first. or throw an a5 and airbucker keeper bars at it.
the JB8 could be set quite a bit closer, but just rules. in this guitar, i definitely prefer the A8 to the A2 or stock A5 in the JB. like the stock version it still does rock and blues sounds easily and cleans up well, but i'm hearing it as being a whole lot less peaky, tighter, and with a bark in the mids i'd expect from a custom.
very interesting blended sounds from the pair so far, but without having tweaked them it's too early to tell.
points i'm wondering about are:
>i don't think a JB via vintage 30s is capable of sounding bad
>i've only tried 3 pickups in this guitar that didn't impress me
>that crusty may have liked this pickup better if the demon coil had hexs and an a2p screw coil was used, instead of vice-versa
>how i'm probably going to squeal like a little girl once i actually start adjusting things, and using EQ
>that i should sell most of my gear and keep the squier, NT15 and a mixed quad.
this info is probably old news for most, but i thought it'd be good to add to the search results.
cheers!
