A GOOD BRIDGE PICK UP FOR A SCHECTER S-1

Retirement and a move to a less populated neighbourhood has caused a substantial increase in my guitar playing activities recently and has justified the acquisition of a humbucker guitar. I usually found I could get by with my double P90 Tele and Strat, Although I have worked on many humbucker guitars over the years ,its been a while since I owned one.

I have been very fortunate to acquire for an extremely modest outlay, a South Korean made Schecter S-1 Elite circa 2006 in excellent condition .. The binding is a touch on the bling side but I am very very happy with this little beauty. The neck and construction is awesome and it plays very well indeed.. Its definitely going to be a keeper. It currently has a single push pull which I think cuts the inner coils. Eventually I will have 3 push pulls and rewire to give Artie's coil swap, coil cut and a combined series/OOP .

The stock pick ups are Duncan Designed and I think those of this era are based on the 59s but I may be wrong. I am aware that these pick ups do have a following but the pups on this particular guitar seem, after 10 years or so., a little on the tired side; Especially the bridge pup. I intend to upgrade both.

The question of replacement pick ups for the S-1, has been discussed before so my apologies for bringing up an old topic but I believe several members have had experience of this guitar and will hopefully be able to offer valuable guidance.

The up market version of the S-1 had I think a 59 in the neck and a Custom Custom in the bridge as stock by the factory so I am sure this combination works well. However, I happen to have lying around an Alnico II Pro which is a neck pick up I like a lot so I plan on using that. The Alnico II pro seems to work well on various guitars from Lesters to Semi hollow bodies so I think it should be OK.

For the bridge I would welcome any guidance and suggestion but am very tempted for cost reasons to go for either the Slash model or the JB as here in the UK really excellent copies of those particular models are available from IronGear at a fraction of the SD cost . Despite its mahogany construction the S-1 seems a fairly bright guitar with good acoustic tones so have an inkling that the Slash might be the better . Also Tonerider do a budget A4 pup which has had some excellent reviews and this has been highly recommended to me for this guitar but am not sure if this will be compatible sound wise and windings wise with the Alnico II Pro in the neck. I am told that Iron gear wind their pups the same as SD.

Anyway votes and reasons for either the JB or Slash and any other suggestions. If necessary I will push the boat out for a new pup (custom custom?) if the improvement over the Slash or JB is likely to be great..I do not play metal and play clean more than I use effects.. I use backing tracks of older stuff..Santana, Gary Moore, Thin Lizzy. Dire Straits .

Iron Gears rock.. The Dirty Torque and the Blues Engine are just fantastic for the money.. My next HH project will have them, if you're in the market for the Slash pickups the Tesla Sharks are pretty close to the Slash set but they don't quite get there, I think the Slash set sounds a little better but the Tesla Sharks are half the price and get you 90% of the way there..
Nice Schecter by the way, I have an ESP blinged out like that with the abalone binding and I love that guitar, they make some good guitars in South Korea..

Tonerider Rocksong sounds good too if you want rockin' A2 equipped pickup in the bridge.

Hi Shooter. Are you saying that the Dirty Torque (JB copy) would be better than the Teslar (slash copy) in this guitar? Maybe I should keep back the SD and go for the Blues Engine /Dirty Torque combo. Still think I should go for the Slash.

This is a great guitar and not a million miles away from the Masterbuild Squier Espri twhich has been changing hands for silly money

Hi Elepe. I have also heard good things about the Rocksong. Do you know if they are 100%compatible with SD s ? Mixing pups from different manufacturers can be a problem if they are wound differently.

The Slash is a great choice, especially with the Alnico II Pro neck. For a slightly more open flavor, check out the Whole Lotta Humbucker as well.

Thanks Dave, WLH was kinda at the back of my mind. Its a great pick up for this sort of guitar.Sadly a bit on the pricey side here in the UK compared with the Tesla Shark.

Unfortunately I never mix Duncan and Tonerider. I did have Duncan and Fender pickup combo and had to fix thing to avoid out of phase. I guess it's expected condition.
