a good crunching, thick, soaring lead tone

I've been playing for number of years, but I still can't get a good, thick, soaring lead tone. I play through a Marshall Mode 4 and use the amp's solo volume but it still doesn't cut through.

Would it work better if I used an overdrive pedal when soloing instead of the amp's solo volume?

Any tips greatly appreciated.

PS; I play mainly chugging heavy detuned metal.

Chances are you're cutting the mids for your rhythm tone. For leads, you NEED mids. Hell, you need them for rhythm, too! The guitar is a MIDRANGE instrument, and cutting the mids will only make you and your band sound like ass.

That said, you may also want to look into an all tube amp.

+ 1, or just a nice EQ or something to boost your mids for leads.
