A Good Neck Pickup To Go With A Dimebucker

Before you say EMG 81/85, Seymour Duncan AHB-1, 2, & 3; please. No ACTIVE pickups. I already have a pair of Seymourduncan AHB-1 Blackouts in my custom made guitar that I built by hand.

I have a Dean Flying V with a Dimebucker in it, and I was wondering what's a good neck pickup to go with the bridge pup to keep a good balance to it.

I play all of the styles of heavy metal and I like to do some original songs with clean tones before adding distoration to it.

Also, don't talk **** about the Dimebucker because I love that little pup. And yes, Dimebag did have it in one of his guitars before he died.

I will only accept SD and DM, because I love the pickups they have. ^_^

Plus, I won't take a 59' Model, I don't like the way it sounds.

What amp are you using? What guitar are you using? Give us some baseline neck position tones you like.

I'm using a Bagura 5V tube amp, a Line 5 Spider IV 75 Watt amp, a custom made Modern Vintage tube head amp with a custom made Modern Vintage cab as well. And I put the guitar up there, a Dean Flying V. And I don't even know what that means. I tune all of my guitars from A-E-A-D-G-B to standard tuning. I'm a huge metal head and I just need a good neck pup because the one I have with the Dimebucker is a stock pickup which the sound is horrible for me.

What don't you like about the neck pickup that's in the guitar? What kind of sound are you looking for?

They're stock pickups, it doesn't have what the Dimebucker or my SH-2N has in my other guitar. I'm looking for something that's brutal and aggressive, with a good balance of lows, mids, and highs like the Dimebucker and AHB-1 has. Something for every type of Metal that will play well with a Dimebucker for rytham.

I think a Jazz could do the job. It's a good pickup for metal cleans IMO.

If you're downtuning to dropped-A, you might want to look into fairly bright neck humbuckers to match the fairly bright Dimebucker. I agree with Nagash that the Jazz could probably pull it off. A Pearly Gates neck or an Invader neck might also work for you.

Dime used a '59n in most of his axes. Allegedly he removed the pole pieces in some, leaving the slugs, so it was basically a P-90. Of course, this is if you want the "Dime" sound.

Well, it's a tad hotter than a '59, I'd say.

Dime himself was known to match his Bill Lawrence L500XLs with '59s and similar pickups.

I think a JB would be pretty legit in the neck since you have the Dime in the bridge.

I've tried that actually! The JB was just too much for the neck position. Way too much output.

What will you use the neck pick up for? Only for leads? If so, what kind of leads? I ask because I prefer to use the neck pup for slower, more melodic and/or bluesier type of playing and use my bridge for any type of shredding. For this reason, I prefer thicker, smoother pick ups such as the AII Pro, 59, PG, etc. in the neck and don't really like pups like the Jazz or Full Shred for that position. If I was doing a lot of fast runs with the neck position, I'd probably go with those pups or something similar. It really depends on what you're doing with it.

Thanks guys. I use the bridge for leads and rytham, the neck for rytham and jazzy type of music while doing intros, and I combine the two to get more of a aggressive, slow pace tone. So I'll check all of the pickups out, and anymore suggestions you'd like to say, I'm open to it. =)

And the leads I do actually varies depending on the song. I can do heavy, brutal leads, fast shreds, slow and 'dark romance' as I like to call it. ^^

Dime also used a Dimarzio Super Distortion in the neck at times. I've tried both Super Distortion(bridge version) & the JB in the neck & liked the JB in there, helps the mids stop the sound getting muddy.

i really like the full shred neck for crisp clean jazzier stuff as its more balanced and articulate than most. probably the most underated neck pickup, I've used it with a distortion and an invader bridge and it sounds great, Bright yet still warm and full. for a hotter darker sounds a distortion neck would be good too.
