A humbucker for the bridge of my strat?

Hey guys!

I have a USA Deluxe strat that I love (especially the neck tones!), but I DESPISE the bridge pickup. I'd like to drop a humbucker in the bridge of the guitar.

The guitar has a maple neck...I'm not sure on the body wood..maybe you guys can tell me since the grain is see thru...

I'm planning to keep the stock fender pots, so I need a humbucker that will work well with those. Also, I'd prefer it to be covered.

Tone wise, I don't need it to do metal...I have that covered with other guitars...I'd like it to do some nice aggressive modern rock tones through my Roadster and Uber. More of an open fat crunch rather than the compressed chug my other guitars do.

I'm thinking something lower output to balance with the other singles, and get some nice clarity....ideas?

****BALANCE IS VERY IMPORTANT HERE...is there a bridge pup that will balance out well with the singles, and still meet my criteria?

Thanks!

Eric

Re: A humbucker for the bridge of my strat?

Hi Eric,

In that type of guitar, I've only used a Dimarzio Super Distortion or JB, which I liked both of, but the standard answer around here for the tones you are shooting for is the Pearly Gates or Pearly Gates +, if you want a little more top end. The pickup is a recreation of Billy Gibbons 1959 Les Paul pickup, so if you're looking for that kind of tone...

As far as the balancing act, I don't know of a humbucker that would balance well with singles. Duncan makes a pickup booster pedal just for that kind of thing. If there is a bucker that will play well with singles, there are people on this forum that will give you the answer. Great people in here.

Hope this helped.

I appreciate the input...the Pearly Gates sounds like it might do the trick.

I'd love to hear what others have to say.

It looks like ash to me.

I had a JB in my Deluxe and it was way overpowered for the singles. I had to keep it dropped down to balance with them and that took away from the distortion and tone.

I have a Pearly Gates in it now. It is very well suited for use with the singles.

It is more of a vintage sounding pickup than the JB but sounds great.

Good luck

Re: A humbucker for the bridge of my strat?

just installed Fender Vintage Noiseless picks in my buddys 80s Ash strat
with a Dimarizo DP103 ( PAF Pro I think ) on the bridge

doesnt have the super trebly bite of say a JB
but when its on its just creamy butter smooth

ya really have to lower the Fenders and raise the Dimarzio to get the volume balanced

he likes em
