A Jam you guys oughta hear!

I found this at the Carvin discussion board... I believe the backing track was done by a poster called Randy Van Sykes, and numerous people played on it.

I didn't personally play on it, but I really liked it and doubt this player would mind me posting it for you all to hear. The beginning has some cool harmonised, Brian May-esque leads, and then some great soloing... Great tone and playing from everyone:

I think Rid may actually have this backing on his page... or did at one point.

Re: A Jam you guys oughta hear!

Yep.
He also posted that little gem on HC.
Look out for Blackstratblues, Alex Flouros(monsterplayer) Ricker, Van Sykes, Ed DeGenaro, they are great players and often have great clips to present on the Amp-fora.
This track is on my pc as well, love their stuff.

HI,

Every once in awhile, you find a clip on the web that just hits ya,,,this is one of them.

Could I get a link to where these guys are?

Also, I've been trying to figure out what's missing in my sound. I hear what's missing in the lead tone of the first solo(18 up to about 40 seconds). It's this little "cunk" sound that comes with each picked note. The only way to describe it is to pronounce "cunck"(does that make any sense at all). Anyways, what amp model would be used for that sound?

thanks,
al

Not really my cup of tea, but I wont deny the players. Some very good playing but it really did'nt grab me.

Re: A Jam you guys oughta hear!

Very tender. Harmonies are wonderful...and I swear there are about 5 notes in the same sequence that could be found by our very own David Gilmour.

I'm sorry, I can't remember what thread it was that I saw it in so I can't go back and see the guy's gear, but I *THINK* he was playing through all Carvin gear. A lot of the guys on that Carvin forum swear by Carvin guitars and amps, etc. Probably one of the Master Tube Series carvins... however, that "cunk" (also known as pick attack) is very easy to create. Given, your lead tone won't sound that great without a decent base (not bass. Base as in the starting point) distortion. You can get a good distortion sound through most tube amps or a modeler like Vox ToneLabs or Line6 POD's...

I myself liked that pick attack sound, so what I did to change up dynamics is took one of my plectrums and cut little grooves and ridges in it with a kitchen knife. Good for grip and gets you those nice little dynamics to start notes.

Also, the forum was the offical Carvin forum: http://apps.carvin.com/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi

I've listened to this thing at least 15 times and everytime I get a really strong Brian May feel at the slow parts and harmonies. Whenever he gets into the "shred-ish" bits, reminds me of Satch a lot.

Never really thought of Gilmour. To me, he's always been more of a blues style player...This guy was using tons of modal notes. Also, one of the things that really sets Gilmour apart is his phrasing. He likes to leave space inbetween his licks and has great climaxes in his soloing, a la "Comfortably Numb"...

Re: A Jam you guys oughta hear!

Thanks for the info. Lately I've been experimenting with pick type and pick position and how it affects sound. I did pick up a quarter and used it as a pick after reading your post, and did notice the change in sound. I like Brian May's sound too,,,doesn't he use a sixpence? Doesn't the sixpence have a serrated edge?

thanks,
Al

Re: A Jam you guys oughta hear!

Yeah, he uses an old english sixpence with a serrated edge... He's probably my favourite guitarist... as if you couldn't tell by my avatar...

If you like May's sound... his sound got really godly on his solo albums ("Back To The Light" and "Another World"). If you want to hear some really nice playing and tone, searching for the songs "Resurrection" and "Rolling Over" by Brian May.

Re: A Jam you guys oughta hear!

Just the other day I was listening to Live Killers. That's wha go me started on the "cunk" thing. I started thinking about what players had that sound and was it caused by technique or equipment.

It's a bit of both actually... a lot of the time, the "cunk" is intentional, and sometimes it's not just the pick. Both Gilmour and May use rakes quite well, by deadining strings and hitting those along with the intended note(s).
