I been playing for a long time, but I feel like Im playing the same over and over I dont see a progress. I can play any song I want, but I cant improvise for ****, are there any type of lessons online? I wanna be able to improvise on the spot, and I want speed too! any advise? or tips? thanks guys.

Re: A little help!

I like taking random phrases and playing them at different tempos to a metronome. Helps with the speed. And sometimes even the crappiest of phrases can sound good at high speed.

Re: A little help!

Songs don't teach you improv skills...music theory does. Scales, modes, chords.

And yes, it's exceedingly dull work at the start. :D

Re: A little help!

The modal system is the key to improv. Learn the modes and you can then improv on command for most tunes.

I would also advise to go to www.guitarbt.com and download some backing tracks that you can jam to. Better than a metronome, and you can make music, not scales.

Yes, but if you learn enough songs and the solos within then you start to build up a library of licks and riffs which you can then piece together.

Basically, the best route to go is songs and theory. You'll be a better musician if you know both.
