A message to those who seek the older EVH tone with a production duncan

I have read many times here now that many feel the CC is just too compressed and hot for the older VH tone
well the CC does a fantastic first 4 EVH records tone if you set it far away from the strings
this makes it lose most of it's compression and really opens it up to sound like a older hot P.A.F :)
try lowering it about the thickness of two quarters bass side and one quarter high E side that should do it
also it is real important to use the CC in a all maple neck' strat type
with the trem set to dive only
the CC to me has a perfect old EVH vibe set and used like this :)

I don't doubt it. While Edward's tone changed a lot over the years, for the most part he had the same base for his tone. He may have used different pickups (I'm sure he did), but I think he had a certain feel he was going for with his tone though sometimes it may have been more subtle and other times more overpowering. Where I have my CC adjusted, I can get pretty darn close to some of his later tones, so I wouldn't doubt a bit that you can adjust it a hair and get some of the older stuff. I wouldn't hesitate a bit to use my PV to try for some of the earlier sounds. In fact, I may try it some time - use your recommendations and tweak it from there.

I agree with Wicked Lester. With my marshall is does those tone really well

The Blues Trembucker gets that tone, no problem.

Lester, I have owned both the EVH and CC and you are right! I wish I didnt even waste my money on that damn EVH becasue the CC can be tweaked to sound "almost" exactly the same. They are VERY close!

Couldn`t you just adjust the pole pieces or is better to just lower the whole pickup?

The early EVH tone was brighter and that might have been in part from using a original Floyd Rose Tremolo

Schaller Floyd Rose Tremolo

This bridge is licenced by Floyd Rose and features fine tuning, a removable tremolo arm and original
type saddles for plain end string anchoring. This bridge is different from the original in that the main
body is dies cast with hardened steel inserts for fulcrum points. Sonically, this die cast design is a
little less bright or brittle sounding than the solid steel original.

Re: A message to those who seek the older EVH tone with a production duncan

But on the early albums Eddie used a Fender trem, which is not as bright as a Floyd.

Shameless plug just to say that the CC is a great pick up. I had a custom that was okay. Recently bought a Hamer Monaco which came with a CC bridge. Very good pick up.

Lower the whole pickup...that would be much better.

I disagree w/ that completely, but I'm NOT saying you're wrong (since I have no idea).

Lowering the pickup further away from the strings, IMO, is like moving a microphone away from a singer's voice. Not a good move.

Better to keep the microphone close, and alter the inner mechanisms that effect tone, like pole pieces, etc. Changing magnet strength, moving the magnet, decreasing coils, going w/ a Hybrid, etc.

I definitely DON'T agree with changing from the generalized recommended pickup height. Never have. When you move the whole pickup, you're moving EVERY tone-effecting mechanism WITH the pickup at the same time.

Just make a d*mn Custom Hybrid w/ an A2 magnet. 11.5K.

There you go. Keep the pickup height RIGHT where it should be.

No offense but none of that is true. Usually two reasons for bad sounds on recordings is the singer being too close to the mic or the pickups being too close to the strings. They don't need to be right on top of them and they weren't designed to be in either case.

I understand what you're trying to say though.

Pickup height varies between models. There's a sweet spot for every one.

What Lester is suggesting is to move the pickup OUT of the so-called "sweet spot", which I don't agree with. That was the point of my post.

I never, EVER said, nor did I insinuate that pickups need to be close to the strings. They simply need to be in their "sweet spot".

Cranking the pickup lower is a BAD move, as is moving it higher. Period.

You don't move the WHOLE tone-receiving mechanism.

And yes, I DO take offense, since you said "none" of what I said was true.
