A Question For You Fuzz Guys

I have a fuzz that I really like for a nasty hard sound. What I need is THE yin to my yang. Please suggest a fuzz that will give me smooth creamy sustained stuff. No 'jack-of-all trades' like were being suggested in the other fuzz threads. I don't need to pay extra for a super fuzz, i have half my sound already. Also can anyone tell me where a muff fits into the spectrum? Thanks in advance, you guys own.

Re: A Question For You Fuzz Guys

A Muff from my experience sounds like exactly what you are looking for. Smooth, sustainy fuzz tones good for lead. Of course, try playing in the lower register with a lot of gain and it will be like trying to run through water, but I cannot think of anything else.

Re: A Question For You Fuzz Guys

I like pink floyd, did gilmour use the muff for 'most' of his signature fuzz stuff? (I know he used a rat as well)

Re: A Question For You Fuzz Guys

I've tried a few different fuzz pedals and still own two. I've got a EH Big Muff and a Dunlop FuzzFace I modded myself. The BM is nice for traditional muff sound, but my FF can give me more classic stuff. I changed the transistors out of mine for some older vintage ones I found online, and it made a nice difference. Good for "Cream" and Hendrix riffs.

Re: A Question For You Fuzz Guys

I like pink floyd too, but I don't know exactly what he used to record all his fuzz stuff. I do remember hearing somewhere that he used a muff at one time. I played a Russian big muff extensively while playing for some band for a few months and that could definitely get you close to the gilmour stuff. Im sure the US Big Muff is closer to what he used, not exactly sure.

Re: A Question For You Fuzz Guys

Almost forgot about the "spectrum" issue. I use the muff in front of everything else on my pedalboard, usually going from there into my wah's, and so on.

I tried the Russian model, and like the U.S. version much better.

Re: A Question For You Fuzz Guys

So far I'm getting alot of positives for the big muff NYC. That's good because that was my original idea, but I had been hearing alot of descriptions of them being nasty sounding, people weren't making it sound like it was able to get creamy.

Re: A Question For You Fuzz Guys

That's why I have my modded FuzzFace. It's all over the creamy vintage stuff. I find that the U.S. Big Muff has a little more high-end sound to it and a heck of a boost, when used extensively. The FF is a little more compressed.

Re: A Question For You Fuzz Guys

I'm gonna recommend a Big Muff as well. I'm also gonna recommend a Digitech Distortion Factory. Why? It's got great Big Muff and Rat models, plus additional EQ controls (mid, mid freq, bass) that the originals don't have.

Re: A Question For You Fuzz Guys

I prefer ToneBender type fuzzes to others.

raw, but controllable, and very vocal

Re: A Question For You Fuzz Guys

I have a US Big Muff Pi, but further on that end of the spectrum, I like the Keeley-modified RAT. It gives the harmonic overtones of a fuzz, but it is a lot more versatile. My Muff seems to have a bit of a floppy bass response, but the RAT with the LM308 chip gives a solid, controllable pounding.

I have something that is raw already. The last couple threads got like this too, where people started suggesting their favorite fuzz, but I'm looking for a nice smooth one to balance out my chainsaw.

Re: A Question For You Fuzz Guys

I like my Fuzzulator a lot, it has a loose/tight switch to switch from Germanium to LED. When the pedal is running on loose low fuzz, with high volume and the tone knob relatively high the sound difference between having it on and true bypass is not noticeable. It can be very classic and subtle or if you crank it it can give loads of Fuzz. The guy who designed it is pretty genius. Here are some sound clips http://www.demeteramps.com/soundclips/

Re: A Question For You Fuzz Guys

I too have the savage end of the fuzz covered (i have the totally over the top Hyper Buzz Boss Pedal thing) Ineeded a creamier-tamer fuzz and got a good deal on a EH Double Muff. Tamer when used as a single muff mode. Very warm, some might say dark. Very nice. Sounds great ahead of a tube amp. But once again the boutique pedal-heads will poo-poo the pedal in favour of a unavailable 500$ one. . . .

Re: A Question For You Fuzz Guys

I have the Tweak Fuzz for some time. Recently, I have just acquired the Twin Tube Classic and I have be using it ever since. I don't know if you can call the TTC a fuzz, but I can get all the sounds of the Tweak Fuzz from the TTC and then some. It sounds much better than the Tweak Fuzz too.

Re: A Question For You Fuzz Guys

I've got the pedal of your dreams....the T. Rex Mudhoney. Send me $180, and you'll have it shipped to your door in 2 days. The Mudhoney acts as an OD, or you can push a little button on top, and it turns into a never ending sustained river of fuzz. On a clean amp, it sounds more fuzzy. On an already overdriven amp, it'll turn your tone into infinite sustain. It's really a unique pedal that I'm hesitant to sell, but I'm jonesin for other pedals too.

Read the harmony reviews on the Mudhoney, and if anyone wants it, it's up for grabs.
