A question pickups.

Hi guy's, I'm having a rough time deciding what pickups I'm gonna put in my Blacktop Jag. I really need a modern sound, I'm completely avoiding "vintage" sound 'cause I really don't like it.

So, here's where I need you're help. I currently have P-90's on my Jag but I really want more power in it. I mostly play rhythm in a alt rock sometimes stoner sometimes metal band and I was ok with the 90's in my main axe but I got an Ibanez DT in a pawn shop that had EMG's and the I changed them for a Jazz/Black Winter combo and also have a Fernandes Ravelle with a P-Rails set, so I grew fond of the humbuckers now.

Do you guys know any good modern sounding mini-humbuckers? Or should I get either (bridge a mini humbucker or P-90) in the custom shop?

Thank you in advance.

Re: A question pickups.

Could you please elaborate more? I really don't see how a "hot" single pickup can solve my problem, I'm not a fan of singles.

Re: A question pickups.

It would help to know about your amplification and pedals before making suggestions.

Can it be assumed that you require replacement pickups of P90 dimensions so that they will fit the stock pickguard, be hum-cancelling and a good deal more powerful than the stock offerings?

Several manufacturers make P90-sized humbuckers. SD, obviously. DiMarzio, TV Jones, Schaller. EMG makes P90-sized versions of their ever-(un)popular -81, -85 and one other. http://www.emgpickups.com/guitar/p-90.html

Do not forget the other possibility that will fit - the Gibson LP Deluxe style mini humbucker. Firebird pickups would also fit if you remove the standard metal mounting surround and fit them à la mini HB via a cut P90 cover.

Although you mentioned Firebird style mini's I'm pretty sure they would be the opposite of what you're looking for in terms of tone and power.

Than you FunkyFingers. The thing with EMG's is that I'll need to route a space for the battery, also I've had 3 guitars that came with stock 81 & 85 and I've sold the 3 pairs and change them for SD's, also I want to be "faithful" to SD's.
I've tried the DiMarzio Super Distortion before and I don't like the sound of it. Somehow I think I was misunderstood, I'm not planning to use full sized humbuckers as I wont rout my main guitar, I cant change the pickguard either because Fender don't sell the model I need and getting materials in my town for one would be reaaally expensive. That's why I'm asking for minis, I was planning to use the the gibson deluxe mounting ring if I get the MHB.

Re: A question pickups.

Well...

Wilde l500s are a very modern sounding humbucker. It also is unique in that it fits in a p90 route. Someone with a dimebucker might be able to confirm if these have the same dimensions. A Wilde l500xl would be a VERY potent humbucker that would work. I dare say it is supremely modern sounding and far from vintage.

You could direct mount it in the cavity with two new holes. There are some old BL l550s which are made to fit a p90 route, and BLUSA sells some still. I like the sound of the old ones with thick blades, but I hate the sound of the BLUSA ones. Much thinner sounding to my ear

Lace alumatone 90s will also yield a unique modern tone.

Neither are duncan options. Since the dimebucker is a clone of the l500xl it might be an option, someone would need to check dimensions though.

Which is kinda funny considering it itself is a 30 year old design.

Though are you sure about it fitting a p90 rout? Ive never tried but i know its narrower than a normal humbucker. But i never tried so i dont know for sure

100%. I tried it after Becky told me it would.

Bill Lawrence does make a Soapbar sized version of their 500 series pickup. Rick Dufay from Aerosmith endorsed them for a while and was in print advertisements.

Well, Bill Lawrence USA does now, and it is not that great. That would be the L550. The vintage thick bladed ones sound pretty good, but are hard to come by. Those were made before the split between Jzchak Wajcman and Bill Lawrence. The Bill and Becky version sounds a lot better than the newer l550s. I have owned all pickups I am discussing. I still own one old L550. It is the thick bladed one, it also has a different number of conductors than the BLUSA L550s.

Re: A question pickups.

I can't get L550 in my country, and if they sound like the Dimebucker it's not what I'm looking for guys, I'm really sorry.

Have any of you used the Drop & Gain mini humbuckers? I've listened a few videos and I liked what I heard.
