A sample of style -- audio clips of my rig from last week's recording session

TwilightOdyssey

Darkness on the edge of Tone
My band recorded the instrumental tracks for 3 new demos right through the hurricane last weekend; was fun! :)

I'm very happy with the raw guitar tones that were captured and thought I would share, as they feature a variety of guitars, pickups, and effects.

There is no EQ, compression, or rides done to any of these yet; they are essentially what was recorded with the addition of a little HPF.

The amp, speaker, mic, and mic preamp were all the same: EAST Studio 2/Randall iso cab with stock V30, Sennheiser e609, and SSL Alpha Channel respectively

SAMPLE OF STYLE #1: BLACK NIGHT
Guitar: Agile AL-2800
Pickups: Bare Knuckle Riff Raff (b), Stormy Monday (n) in parallel
Effects: Hartman Tommy Bolin fuzz, Greer Sweetback driver

SAMPLE OF STYLE #2: DEMAGOGUE
Guitar: Ovation Legend
Guitar 2: Agile AL-2500 Natural Albino
Pickups: Lollar Imperial set
Effects: Fulltone Ultimate Octave, MXR Script 90

SAMPLE OF STYLE #3: ENTHRONED
Guitar: 1980 SG R-1
Pickups: Stock, Moog filter not engaged
Effects: Xotic BB Preamp, Greer Sweetback Driver
Synth: David Smith MOPHO
Synth Amp: VOX LNT with Mullard 12AX7 in V1

Re: A sample of style -- audio clips of my rig from last week's recording session

Sounds good so far!

I like the tone of both the Agiles, but the 1 with Lollars sounds even so slightly darker than the other. Could be the pups or possibly the Octave fuzz I guess?

The SG tone is definitely darker than the others, and also has a bit more of a fuzzier edge to it. Really suits the song though imo.

I know it's only a very rough recording but I do like the rawness of the drum tracks and the tone of the bass but think it'd sound even better if it was up a bit more in the mix.

I'm interested to see how these songs play out as you work on them more :)

Nice!!!

What was the drive you use for the #3 sample - its quite thick and sludgy, but interesting!

Re: A sample of style -- audio clips of my rig from last week's recording session

Mostly that's the guitar. The R1 is beautifully sludgy!

Re: A sample of style -- audio clips of my rig from last week's recording session

Nice job - I think my fav was R1!

Agreed. I have the UO set for the 'fat' setting, which darkens/thickens the tone up a bit and allows you play lines lower on the neck with very little of the octave effect peeking through.

Agreed and thanks.

I can't really do any tonal shaping until the vox are sitting in there. And of course, everything can't be equally loud in a mix.

Yeah I know, just something I noticed :)

Believe I'm digging the SG the most as well- just seems to have a bit more depth..and a bit more attitude as well...which I LOVE about SGs.

You guys gonna put up a demo disc Ben? if so, LMK I'd like to buy a copy!

Thanks, Jeff.

No, no demos will be available in any mechanical format. We will be recording the first album soon, though!

I liked all the tones. Not sure that the musical style is my cup of tea, but the tones were all pretty great.

Thanks! And thanks for listening even tho it's not your preferred style.

Kind of reminds me of pre-British Steel Priest...which I really like.
