A tip for removing gooey humbucker tape adhesive

I thought I would share this little tip I discovered last night. So I was doing some mag swaps recently on a few older zebra Duncan trembuckers and the adhesive for the black fabric tape that surrounds the pickup was the gooiest black tar like mess i have ever seen on a pickup. The adhesive ended up getting on my fingers and hands which in turn got on top of the pickup bobbins as I was swapping the mags. It was especially noticeable on the cream bobbins.

I first tried to use some rubbing alcohol on both my hands and the pickups but it really didn't do a too much and using soap on my hands still left a bunch of black slightly less gooey adhesive on my hands.

The miracle cure was simply vegetable oil from the kitchen cabinet. I poured a small amount on a paper towel and rubbed my hands and all the black tar crap easily wiped away. For the pickups, I poured a small amount of oil into a bowl and used a Q-Tip/ear swap with just a tiny amount of oil on it and rubbed off all the black adhesive from the top of the bobbins and then cleaned off all of the oil with a paper towel. It completely worked like a charm and left the pickups with a nice bit of gloss.

most heavy duty industrial solvents are actually part of the same chemical family as simple cooking oils and flammable fuels, so yeah, in a pinch oil or naphtha makes a great solvent for cleaning gunk.

Up next: a thread on ways to remove vegetable oil from pickups.

You learn something new everyday. I figured naptha would work but I unfortunately didn't have anything else to use and didn't want to run to the hardware store. Like I said, you only have to use a tiny amount on the bobbins and you can clean the oil of with a little alcohol.

I've used Goo Gone for stuff like this, for years. It's oily, so like vegetable oil and some of the others, it will leave a residue, but a Windex type of cleaner will take it right off of any nonporous surfaces.
