A truly "custom" pickup from the CS.

I was wondering if the Custom Shop would make a pickup to a person's design. I have this A5 bar mag laying around and I wanted to make a "Stat" pickup using a bar instead of rods. Pretty much the same kind of wind, fiber flatwork, etc, but just designed for a bar mag to fit. Does anybody know if the CS does these kinds of things or would it cost too much for it to be worth it?

Sounds like a Fralin Steel Pole.

Not really. I'm talking about the actual Alnico V bar BEING the "rail" instead of loading the bobbin with the steel bar with a mag underneath. Really simple. Like a single-coil version of the Scott Ian El-Diablo, to give one example, but with fiber instead of plastic bobbins and a typical Strat wind with the right wire. I really want the same kind of magnetic field that you get with the magnet being the "pole piece" instead of the P-90/Humbucker kind of field, only with the advantage of a rail. I might just buy some flatwork from StewMac, some wire and wind the thing myself, but I would much rather Seymour or MJ do it than me.

one way to find out....call and ask them!

Re: A truly "custom" pickup from the CS.

i think they would do that.

i dont know if i would go thru the trouble of using your magnet since they have a ton of alnico bar magnets there. is there anything special about your magnet?

No, I would just have them make the thing with their stuff, if I decided to do it. I just wasn't sure if they do one-off designs. I'll call them. Personally I think it would be a cool pickup, impart the traditional Strat tone with the advantages of a rail for bending and things.

I'm sure if you put together the flat work etc, and send them the empty bobbin they would wind it for you. Give them a call though.

If it will save me money, I'd just do that. I really don't have time to hand-wrap 8000 or some odd turns on a pickup and I don't trust my "soldering skills" enough to finish the thing. ;)

Looks like I'm falling under the "Call for Quote" category. Anyhoo, I left MJ a message. :)

Re: A truly "custom" pickup from the CS.

i dont think they would want you making your own bobbin, im sure they would prefer to do it

If it will cost me the same as a typical custom pickup, I'm definitely interested. For all I know, they may have already done exact that thing for somebody.

Re: A truly "custom" pickup from the CS.

It sounds like a half El Diablo. Except using flatwork instead of a bobbin?

The El Diablo uses A2s. There'd be more pull from the A5, I'd imagine, but interesting.

Re: A truly "custom" pickup from the CS.

Magnets cost pennies. I can't see you making much of a saving on a custom pickup by supplying your own magnet. Why not just tell the custom shop what you want and let them take care of everything ?

Re: A truly "custom" pickup from the CS.

I think OP is describing a Melody Maker pickup with an A5 magnet. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
