A visit from the muse, more P-90 metal insanity

There's nothing like your band breaking up and forming a new band from it's ashes to get the creative muse twirling around between wakefulness and sleep. This is the first of several songs I've written recently for the new band, using my '63 Junior for just about everything save for some lead stuff.

Nothing really fancy going on production-wise. My drummer actually programmed the drum tracks for me on this one. Comments, feedback, and all manner of derision are welcome.

I was hoping somebody would be able to give me some feedback on this one - I'm taking my band in a new direction and I'm curious to see what people think of it (sans vocals for now).

I like it, man. It sounds less brutal, but more moving and driven than other stuff of yours that I've heard.

Which of the songs on there would be a good example of the direction you were moving in as opposed to this particular song? I might be able to give you a more insightful review if I knew what to compare it to.

Basically this song, Phantom Skull, Discus Lord, and Downtown Transient represent the new direction. Those songs have all been written pretty much around the same time.

Downtown Transient sounds fantastic. By far my favorite of the four. If I were to compare it to stuff that I'm familiar with, I'd say it sounds kinda like a cross between Deftones, Bush and Tantric. Really unique sounds and a great mood. Awesome song.

Eraser was my second favorite of the bunch. Parts of it remind me of classic rock (like the intro), and in some parts I hear stuff that reminds me of Bush. I really like the way this song moves. I really like how you play the heavier parts, then suddenly switch to something a tad slower and more melodic. Kind of makes me think of a roller coaster. It's fast and turbulent, then you slowly go up an incline, then it's back to being fast and turbulent. Very good song.

Phantom Skull reminds me of Metallica. Easily the fastest and heaviest of the bunch. Good song. Seemed kind of out of place compared to the others, but I liked it.

Discus Lord is a good driving hard rock song. It doesn't remind me of anything that I'm familiar with. This one seemed a little bland to me, probably because it doesn't have any vocals at the moment. Dispite that, it does sound interesting. I'd really like to hear this one again once there are vocals recorded.

These songs sound excellent, man. I'd love to hear these once they're complete with vocals.

Thanks man, I really appreciate the feedback. I think Discus Lord is probably the most interesting from a playing standpoint, but it's very telling that you found it the least interesting as a listener.

I was worried that Downtown Transient might drag on a little too long, but the whole point behind that song was to really take the time to develop each melodic idea within it. I'm glad you dig that one.

If you go down and listen to the earlier tracks, I think you'll find that they're definitely different than the new stuff, and taking it all in as a whole will give you more of an idea of how I'm trying to shift things. My old band suffered from too many genres/not enough consistency/songs too short, so I decided to just go more metal on it and shore things up a bit more.

See, the reason I enjoyed Downtown Transient so much was because of the strong melodic structure it has. It's a very moving song without vocals needed to help it move along. That's the exact reason I found Discus Lord kind of bland. Without vocals, it seems to lack that strong melodic structure that really moves the song along. However, once that track has vocals, I'm certain it will be killer. It is very interesting. It's kinda like food. Say you're making your favorite dish but you didn't put enough of one ingredient in it, so it loses that flavor that makes you love it. It just needs that ingredient. It's a very promising base, it just needs vocals to really fill it out and move it along with a melody.
