Little iIbanez RG 420 that came out last week in one of our shops. What the heck did they do to these FRETS?? NEVER seen frets corroded this bad and it was in the case so???
What folk do to these poor unsuspecting guitars at time is just :argh:

Re: A WTF Pawn shop carnage guitar.

Really simple.......frets that are cheap and tarnish easily - plus even in a case a long time spent in a humid environment will do that.

I'm assuming your shop actually looks at guitars before choosing to buy them.

Re: A WTF Pawn shop carnage guitar.

I've posted many times about hating the fret material they use on the cheaper/lower-mid level Ibanez stuff.

Re: A WTF Pawn shop carnage guitar.

Gulf coast salty humid air....

That certainly exasperates the issue, but even after a couple years in the case within a climate-controlled area in the midwest they will still start getting a light chalky dust (aka corrosion) on their surfaces.

They are also very soft and will groove very easily with all but an advanced player's touch. A rookie will carve them like butter IME.

Re: A WTF Pawn shop carnage guitar.

Probably kept out in the shed, I am guessing. The Gulf Coast's 100% humidity + cheap fret material will do that. But the real question is 'Why did a pawn shop buy that?"

Re: A WTF Pawn shop carnage guitar.

I was just looking these up, and apparently, there were quite a few variations of the RG420. Some made in Japan, Korea, and Indonesia. Some with Mahogany, Ash, or basswood bodies. Depending on which you have, could be kinda cool to refret and restore.

Re: A WTF Pawn shop carnage guitar.

Probably bought it at a steep discount

And expecting our friend to polish the turd

More like some bone head at that shop didn't look at it when he took it in and yep now they hand off to me the pro turd polisher LOL!! Was sitting in the corner when I came in to work that shop so I just had to ask what's with that guitar ? Answer it's waiting on you cause we don't know what to do with it---:banghead:.

Re: A WTF Pawn shop carnage guitar.

I say after you refret it and set it up nice, you should go for a psychadelic look, with the 420 and all.

Re: A WTF Pawn shop carnage guitar.

If the guitar is indeed from the Birmingham Ala area I don’t think it was the salty coast air since B-ham is 250 miles from the coast. I don’t think it was the humidity either. Even though the humidity can get quite unbearable in Florida and Alabama sometimes.

I’m curious to know what make and model of quitar it is?

Re: A WTF Pawn shop carnage guitar.

Cheapo refret? Unfortunate choice of fretboard cleaning product that reacts with copper alloys?

Re: A WTF Pawn shop carnage guitar.

That's easily fixed with a screw driver and about 2minutes or less of work (in a lot of cases). All you do is loosen the screws put the guitar on the bench/floor with a rag or whatever under body and headstock and push down on the horn with the headstock on the ground until the dot/strings is centered hold it there and tighten it in place.

You know Dave thinking about it I have seen several Ibanez newer lower line guitars with corroded frets but can never remember seeing another brand where they have been so bad unless obviously in a high humidity environment. This one is the worst I have seen and in particular did not make sense as the case is dry inside and there is no real evidence of excessive moisture.
Game plan is pull the strings and then get after the frets with OOO steel wool (After I wrap the neck pickup in plastic to keep any wool fibers out!!) . Lets see what shape these frets are in after I get the outer layer of tarnish off and take it from there.
Not my guitar but the shops and I need to pull the ticket see who took it and have a chat with um!!!
