A2, A5, A8?

I can hear the difference between the A2 and A5 in the Custom “fold”, seems to be an almost symmetrical EQ inverse.
I was wondering what an A8 mag might sound like, or what it would add/detract from the sound.

I was thinking of using the A8 in another pup, but the Custom “fold” was a good example to examine the characterisic change.

When does a Amag become a ceramic? A25? LOL!!!

Thanks

Well, an Alnico magnet is named so because of the metals it's made of: Aluminium, Nickel and Cobolt (if i'm correct). Therefore, AlNiCo. :)

Obviously you saw the humour there bro. :bigthumb:

Ah... you see, it's 6 in the morning here, and i'm not working correctly. :D

Well, from what i've heard, an Alnico 8 does actually sound much fatter than an Alnico 3- correct me if i'm wrong.

So i don't think that the magnets gets brighter and more "ceramic-like" with higher values.

Re: A2, A5, A8?

The A8 custom is similar to the ceramic custom...with the A8 having a bit more string pull. It smooths out the highs at the cost of *some* agressiveness. The lows get pumped up a bit, but the midrange doesnt get scooped out like on the C5.

In terms of output...there might be a bit of an increase between the C8 and the custom...but they're pretty similar.

Re: A2, A5, A8?

A8 has also a certain amount of Titanium added to the Alnico. This makes them more expensive. For me it has the best of both worlds the strength of a thin ceramic (out of a Custom) and the rounder highs of a a3/A5. I tried a Custom 8, a JB 8 and a 11k overwound PAF with a A8.
Balls to the wall with all of them.

Thanks guys!

Where can one get A8's at?
About what do they run?

I've got a coulpe of pups that might work well this this added sound.

Off to the lab...............................well after I get the A8's, oops, forgot about that part.

The A8 is more aggresive than the A5 though, right?

Re: A2, A5, A8?

It is more beefy , more punch , more definition but still round , not fuzzy like ceramic .
Added mids and power compared to al5 .

Re: A2, A5, A8?

Alnico 3 is the weakest of the Alnico Bros. Alnico 8 is the strongest, with Alnico 5 a distant second.

Alnico and ceramic are just two different animals, made out of completely different materials.

Re: A2, A5, A8?

Hey Zhang

are you discussing how it would sound in a Custom as in a C8? or the materials they are made of?

Re: A2, A5, A8?

You mean ceramic vs. A8? I guess it's really both but I was talking about the materials at the time because someone was asking something like "what point does Alnico become ceramic, A25?"

Now are you coming to get O-Bucker #3 tonight or what? There's no rain in the forecast. (These LA people...)

(Just kidding Olin, PLEASE don't hurt me again...)
