How close would a A2pro neck be to a 59 neck with an A5 magnet swap ?

I think Im looking for a more balanced neck tone, A2pro is very round and loose. I probably should have gone with the 59. Would it be comparable ?

With a a-5, It is close. I have both in the neck slots of my 2 teles. The aph5n, is slightly more bassy, and has more mids.

Re: A2ProN-59N ???

You could also try an A4, which doesn't have the boominess of an A5, but it's got a tighter low end than an A2. It bridges the gap between A2's (which are mid heavy) and A5's (which are heavy on lows & highs).

Re: A2ProN-59N ???

A4 actually sounds just about perfect. I'm gonna order a pair and try a Custom 4 as well.

Where do you guys get these magnets? Maybe I want to turn my 59N into an A2PN!

Re: A2ProN-59N ???

Put 1/2" screws in your 59n and the bass will even out. It won't sound boomy and overly warm because with shorter screws it acts more like the other coil and the signal won't travel so deep like the standard 3/4" screws does. I love this mod on my 59n pickups in my LPC guitars. Also you don't have to take the pickup out and do a mag swap, just unscrew the oem screws and put in the shorter ones. Cheaper too.:cool2:

That short screw mod works really well for the custom custom also.

This mag swap stuff is getting out of control!

+1 Works great on 59's!

Re: A2ProN-59N ???

And if you really want a great pup, go to the CS and they'll wind it the way you want with the mag you want!

Re: A2ProN-59N ???

But if you have nickel or gold covers, now you have to take the pickup out of the rings, unsolder the covers, losen the baseplate, change the mag out , put it back in the rings, solder the cover back on,then see if you like the mag swap at all. Its still a gamble because you dont know if that new mag will sound close to what you think its going to from all others opinions. Much easier to try shorter screws and see if that takes booming lows out of a neck 59 pu. Takes less than 5 min. for that mod to try. Fixed that problem for me in the neck position of my Gibson LP's

it'll definitely change the character of you're 59n, but it won't make it an a2pN, just an a2 59 since they're wound differently. while you're at it i'd suggest you also order more than just 1 magnet(get one of each:naughty:) along with some different value orange drop capacitors to play around with. and if you're order gets to over $50 you get free shipping:)

Re: A2ProN-59N ???

Just an update here. With the A2ProN, I tried it with the A2, A4, and A5. All were progressively better at getting my tone where I wanted it. But it was still fairly far off.

I did acquire a 59n and I must say it is 98% there. Allmost perfect in this guitar. The low end is a hair and I mean a hair more prominent than i would like it to be. Clean to a dirty clean is sweet, high gain is where it's slight tonal mismatch shows up to me. But with the low end being much tighter now it is perfectly fine. The midrange shape between the two winds is staggering in how different they truely are. The 59n mids and high end, along with it's overall voice are as close to perfect as I could only imagine. Those mids and highs are rivaling my other #1 for it's spot now at the neck position.

But the overall character is miles away from the APH wind. They are nothing alike and this is where I should have started with originally. The 59n is a truely great pickup for a setneck mahog guitar with a darker vibe.

I guess this is a true classic wind for Seymour and I am now a fan. I gotta get a 59b and try it in a couple guitars down the road.

Re: A2ProN-59N ???

Did you try an A4 in the 59N? It's a great combo, softens the bass and treble. If you don't like the tone of that, try weakening an A5 mag, which will mellow out the pup but in a slightly different way. I agree, the 59N is a great pup when you tame the bass.
