A2Ps vs. Seths

I need a new set of pickups for my LP Classic. The '57 Classics it came with aren't right for me, so I put an old set of '59s in there. Good, but I fear the Seths in my LP Standard have made me an A2 addict. Every time I go back to the Seths I just love that combination of smooth and bright. :32:

I'm tempted to just buy another set of Seths, but I have also heard a lot of great things about the A2Ps and I'm pretty sure I would like those too.

So, anyone who has experience of playing both Seths and A2Ps, I'd really welcome your opinions on the differences and similarities between the two. Which do you prefer and why?

Compare and contrast away! :)

Thanks,

Simon

Put the Alnico II mags that are inh the 57 Classics into the 59's. Trust me on this. ;)

Thanks for the tip, but I can't do that, as someone is buying the '57s from me.

Re: A2Ps vs. Seths

Simon,

Since you already have and love the Seths, why not check out the A2P's in the other guitar. It'll give you some variety and it's bound to sound good. That's what I'ld do.

Re: A2Ps vs. Seths

:smack: That's a shame. Torres Engineering sells alnico II mags also. You might want to check them out. The 59 with Alnico II mags is rsally worth checking out. It's not quite like anything I've tried.

Re: A2Ps vs. Seths

I was torn between the Seths and AP2/CC combo for my 02 Classic, based upon what I had read in the forum and the tones I was after. I eventually went with an AntN/SethB combo, due mostly to great prices, and was very pleased with the results.

My point - I can't talk from experience, but if I were in your shoes, I would give that AP2/CC combo a shot. It is regarded very highly among some of the more experienced forum members, and I'm curious to see what you think of it!

That's the way I'm thinking currently. ;)

Re: A2Ps vs. Seths

Well, I'm not of any help, but I was wondering the same thing. I've been checkin around, and I'm torn between a Seth and AP2 neck.

So, I guess... Bump? :D

Re: A2Ps vs. Seths

Simon - from my little play time that I have had with my a2pro bridge so far, I am really liking it. It has similar characteristics to the Seth Lover. It certainly has the a2 midrange qualities, and, like you, I have become hooked on that character :32: :)

When soloing in the higher ranges, the a2pro seems to sting a little more, or, maybe the word is sizzle. The a2pro is excellent at reproducing high notes. The sound is trebly, but smooth. The Seth Love seems to be a little more mellow in the upper ranges when compared to the a2pro.

The Seth Lover seems to have a little more midrange honk. I notice that especially when I bend the G string at the 4th fret.. or in that area.

The a2pro seems to have a little more punch when playing heavy chords.

I put my SL in one of my teles and the a2pro in my Les Paul. Both of those guitars sound pretty darn good for what they are :)

Well, I bought my Seths from you a couple of years back and I love 'em! But an A2P purchase could be coming up soon. So many pickups, so little time!

Thanks Stevo. :)

I think I really have to give the A2P's a try. :13:

Nickel Custom Custom/Seth Lover Lover.

That is exactly the set I use in my Hamer Monoco Super Pro. Nickel covers too! That set beats every humbucker set I have compared them to including the Tom Holmes HB's in my Les Paul. Lew

Re: A2Ps vs. Seths

Go for an A2P set Simon.

If you like the S.Ls in your LP you'll love A2Ps !

I had Seths in one of my LP for long and still use them in almost all my PRSi.

I switched to A2Ps in the LP never removed since then.

Slightly punchier and more boomy , it's almost the perfect PUs for a LP.

Give them a try

Re: A2Ps vs. Seths

I have an 89 Les Paul Standard that has an Alnico Pro in the neck and a bridge pickup not mentioned in this thread, the Pearly Gates. I have a pair of Sets and Antiquitys to try out in the future, but I am very happy with the present combo.

Hey Captain! How you doing? They're all great and we all have our favorites. Personally, as much as I love the Seths and AIIPros, my faves in a Les Paul are the Pearly Gates. All three (Seth, AIIPro and PG) are variations on the same alnico 2 paf humbucker design...but there's no doubt that the PG was designed specifically to compliment and sound great in a Les Paul.
