A5 to A2 magnet swap in a JB. Expected output change?

Hi all,

As a compulsive tinkerer, I'm kicking around the idea of doing the A5 to A2 magnet swap in a JB to round it out a bit. From those who've done this, how much output should I expect to lose(as a rough percentage)? Being that I have a Quarterpounder in the neck, I don't want to lose more that 10% of the output as a neck with more power than the bridge is just too weird for me.

Thanks all!

Actually, the EQ is more affected than output. I didn't notice an output change in mine, but an EQ shift towards a rounder tone...maybe that can be perceived as a slight loss of output, but it still hit the amp the same way.

i agree, there is a bit of an output drop but the tonal shift is more noticeable

Have you thought about trying a UOA5 instead?

The unoriented magnets are supposed to be smoother with less harsh upper mids....is that correct?

Well, from what I understand, UOA5 falls between A2 and A5 in strength. You would get more mids than an A5 but lose less bass than an A2.

Sounds like an ideal compromise...

Re: A5 to A2 magnet swap in a JB. Expected output change?

I put one in a JB that's in my Schecter Blackjack. It gives it a much more vocal quality. This guitar is a set neck string through body design with a TOM bridge. I think that it's mahogany and it has a lot of natural lows with a surprisingly bright top end. The magnet swap made the JB a perfect fit for it.
In contrast, I have a standard JB trembucker in a Jackson DXMG with a Floyd and I won't be changing a thing.

I have a uoa5 custom and love it. Very well-rounded tone. Probably would be similar for a jb.

Uoa5 doesn't do cleans well, though. It needs at least crunch. But the overdriven tones are rich.

In my Schecter, I have the option to split and when doing so, my UOA5 JB does cleans quite well. Almost strat like, but not as thin and piercing.

Personally, I don't like any magnet I've tried in a JB, as it isn't the wind for me. Good thing I have some other choices.
