About modded ds-1 pedals

Hi, I'm looking to mod my ds-1 to get a chunkier and warmer tone? out of it. Maybe put some more bottom end in there... A lot more actually :headbang: But I'm wondering how much the mod would be? Does it take more work than just soldering?

Re: About modded ds-1 pedals

you might wanna replace a cap or two as part of the mod, but that's just soldering too!

if you already have access to an iron and solder, you're looking... oo.. about 44 cents? lol

Re: About modded ds-1 pedals

Look for my recent thread comparing my stock DS-1 to my newly-acquired Keeley Ultra Mod. The good news is, the modded DS-1 is WAY better than the stock unit. The bad news is Keeley's kind of pricey, and I can't really tell you how the OTHER available mods compare. Check these two sites for various commercially-available mod kits - they are relatively cheap and simple.

Back to the subject of Keeley - my Ultra mod version really contains two modes, his older "Seeing Eye Mod" and a newer "Ultra" mode. I prefer the SEM, and highly recommend it. I'm pretty sure a description is available on his website to allow you to DIY. (I have a link on my work computer - PM me Monday if you can't find the webpage, and I'll shoot you the link.)

Re: About modded ds-1 pedals

The actual cost of modding a DS-1 shouldn't be more than a couple bucks, tops. Soldering a board is a little different than inside a guitar, but if you're careful, it shouldn't be a problem.

If you try it yourself, make sure you test it after each component gets swapped.

Re: About modded ds-1 pedals

Actually, a lot of the benefit to mods is improved tone/response by putting in better components. 44 cents may be a bit on the low side, unless you plan to replace parts with the same crap Boss put there in the first place.

Still, it will be cheaper if you source components yourself. That said, I think the prices for mod kits (Monte Allum's for example are fair). You get all the needed parts in one package, with instructions, and minimize experimenting since the mod is already sorted out. Well worth it in my book.

Re: About modded ds-1 pedals

Hey, I think (thought) I'm pretty good / precise at soldering, and I went to mod a DS-1 with my buddy and we got schooled by how tiny it was.

He ended up sending it to Monte Allums, who did the mods for it and sent it back.

Your mileage may vary, but I honestly thought I was proficient at soldering, and we bungled this thing up.
