? about svetlana tubes

Re: ? about svetlana tubes

 I'm thinking about getting some svetlena el34 tubes for my Marshall TSL602 but I'm a little bit confused about which ones to get. MF has 3 different options: hard/blue, medium/green, soft/red. does anyone know the difference between these 3 options? which one would be best for my amp? thanks!

I would suggest getting your tube from another dealer. http://www.revolutionguitar.com/tubes/index.htm
or
http://www.dougstubes.com/

Both are very good dealers and may have better prices. Also give them a call and they can tell you everything on questions you may have on tubes.

Hard tubes are supposed to distort less quickly under gain. This means that you have to have the amp gain almost dimed before it becomes audibly distorted. If you don't like the sound of power amp distortion, hard tubes are for you.

Medium is average of course.

Soft tubes are supposed to distort early under gain. This means that the tubes may start distorting when you have the power section volume on 4 or 5 rather than 7 for mediums or 9 for hard tubes (only an example for a hypothetical amp). Soft tubes are good for cases where you want more power tube distortion and possibly less preamp tube distortion in your signal to achieve your desired tone. Too much power tube distortion (yes there is such a thing) can sound muddy and unfocused in certain amps.

If your amp sounds too clean and sterile at high volumes and you already have mediums, get the soft tubes. If you have muddy sound at higher gain settings and you can't get it to clean up like you want, get the hard tubes. Otherwise get mediums to replace what you already have.
