about the stones

this thread might not interest anyone .. but i wanted to throw it out there to anyone interested in copping a few giggles over how cool the simple electric guitar can be

i am getting ready for a gig tonight and will be playing / singing 'honky tonk woman' by the stones ... so i decided to tune the tele clone to open G and bring it along for that song ... i usually play my regular tuned guitar for this tune in the interest of saving time at practice and having 'good enough be good enough' ... but damn if having it in the correct tuning as used by keef doesnt give that tune some extra mojo ...

i'm tellin ya, take off the low string ... tune the guitar to

- X - G - D - G - B - D

and wail on some I-IVs like your keef ... sling it a little lower than usual ... choppy right hand ... and BAM, it's THERE

makes me wanna do a half set of nuthin' but stones

too cool

have fun

Re: about the stones

Music doesn't have to be complex to be good and The Stones are a prime example of simplicity at its best. 5 strings + 2 chords = lots of killer tunes if you are Keef.

Re: about the stones

I absolutely HATED the Rolling Stones until relatively recently.... and now I can't get enough :)

Re: about the stones

You gotta tune open for that song. I leave the low E on, just tune it to D.

Can I be stupid here?

You said to tune the guitar to open D - then show an open G. Can you enlighten me? I don't get it.

And I agree, tuning the low string to D would make sense... why not?

not stupid at all .. i was careless ...

thanks for catching my typo - i fixed it

he removes the low E string instead of just dropping it to D because he likes the root of his chords to be the bass note and the 5th string has the root for his style

maybe he needed to rip off the low E string for a tie-off once back when he was on the spike and it just caught on after that :D

Re: about the stones

He probably didn't have a replacement and was too cheap (or broke) to do so.

Now it's a signature.
