AC15 Recording Options

I'm looking for the best value to record a Vox AC15 to a computer. I've got a Toneport UX-1 which has a 1/4" guitar input and a XLR mic input but I don't have any mics. Up until now I've used my Blackstar HT-5's line out for recording but I want to use the AC15 now and I'm not sure the best way to proceed.

I'm looking for something super simple and easy to use because I don't want to futz around with stuff for hours just to record a simple lick. One thing I've looked into a little bit is the H & K Red Box direct input and it looks like it would work pretty well but I'm curious if any of you guys have used it. The other option would be to get a mic, but that kind of seems like a pain with having to find the best placement plus I don't have a ton of room in my practice space so to have a mic sitting out in front of the amp would be a little annoying.

What do you think? Mic or Red Box (or other)?

If mic, what is a good value? I know lots of people recommend the SM57, but are there any cheaper alternatives for someone who isn't looking for professional level gear?

If Red Box, are there any other similar options that I'm not aware of?

Re: AC15 Recording Options

After doing some more looking, it looks like Behringer has a DI kind of like the Red Box, the GI100. Anyone have any thoughts on this? It's quite a bit cheaper than the Red Box but I'm always a little hesitant to get any Behringer stuff... :)

I don't know what your price range is, but it's hard to beat a Shure SM57 for micing up an amp (and those retail for under $100). When I first started, I bought a Tascam US-122 USB mic preamp and that wasn't bad for the money (I still use it for my MIDI stuff). This looks like a pretty decent mic preamp for the money: http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/iO2exp/

Micing amps is pretty darn easy and with something like the SM57, you can throw it right on the center of the cone for a bright cutting sound or move it slightly off if you want a fuller, darker tone. SM57s were made for aggressive and loud sources, so they can handle whatever kind of reasonable abuse you can put it through.

You have a UX-1 so adding a mic isn't alot more. Sm 57s can be had cheaper second hand otherwise another option is the Audix i5.
