Acoustic guys….

Aceman

I am your doctor of love!
Acoustic guys….

So I saw an Acoustic that was originally a RIGHT hander, that had been converted to a LEFT hander.

Part of the way this was done was to replace the output jack hole in the bottom. But more so, they cut an entire notch out of the [what would have been] the lower bout to swap the eq/volume controls, so when flipped, they could be reached.

What say you about this? The hole in the side was covered with some flimsy plastic film. Could it be converted back? Would this seriously impact the sound?

Comments?

Re: Acoustic guys….

You're the one who saw it, so you can tell us if the sound quality sucked or not.

Re: Acoustic guys….

I would believe it would have a detrimental effect but of what magnitude, I couldn't say.

Re: Acoustic guys….

tell us Ace
how does one flip the bridge on an acoustic from right to left

did they pull that off or just hack it up too?

my buddy was gonna convert a righty to a lefty for his daughter
but the angled bridge was the undoing

he couldn't figure out how to easily do that one thing

decided the best thing to do was just buy one that came from the factory lefty

Re: Acoustic guys….

Let's just say I wouldn't buy a guitar in that condition unless it sounded spectacular to me.

Re: Acoustic guys….

You don't replace the ENTIRE bridge - just the white saddle part, under which the piezo transducer is usually found.

It actually sounded ok.

Brian - I did not rule out the possible use of duct tape.

Re: Acoustic guys….

Re: Acoustic guys….

Most acoustic bridges are angled
Flipping the saddle doesn't address this

I don't believe you've told us what it is. Make/model, price, that would help determine whether it's worth it or not. Anything can be undone, anything can be fixed. But I need more info.

Re: Acoustic guys….

Old Dean Tuscon. Not a tone beast by any means - Pawn Shop Prize with great potential for…personalization etc….

This not even worth your consideration Frank.

That said - Do the side panels REALLY impact the guitar tonally?

Neck? Sure
Top? Absolutely!!!!

Side….not so sure. And after it goes through Monte Allums CS-3 / Zoom Modelling / Acoustic Exciter….

Re: Acoustic guys….

Leave it and put a mic there. It's the new Bose Surround Sound Hole, or Dean Personal Monitoring System for Acoustics.

Of course it does...there are differences in tone to be heard from the sides and back of acoustics with different woods, so gouging a hole in it will have an impact on resonance ( think of it as an escape route for the sound produced, which would normally only reverberate and then escape through the soundhole).

However, does it impact the way you would use it? That's another question. I would think that the impact on a piezo-equipped guitar would be less than on a guitar that uses a mic-based pick-up... even more when the guitar is then run through a long effects chain.

Myself, I'd never buy a guitar that doesn't sound great unplugged first and I use a mic-based pick-up (magmic). The hole on the side will be detrimental to the acoustic sound and be a deal-breaker.

That being said, if you like it and the price is right go for it...
