Acoustic Strap Button Position

Hi Guys,

Yup, if you hadn't noticed I'm around at the moment, good to be back.:friday:

Some project updates probably due, and they'll be posted when complete.

Meanwhile...

Anyone have an opinion as to the best place to fit a 'neck' strap button on acoustic guitars? Minimising its interference with playing is a high priortity.

Suggestions for Degrees off the centre line welcome.

Also whether it should be 'dead' centre or 'forward' or 'behind' the centre of gravity.

I'm looking to see if there is a consensus or just get a feel of preference before I drill holes in 2 expensive guitars.

Any knowledge/opinion welcome.

I do mine as follows:

i found this image through a google search so its not mine but it accurately represents where i drill my strap holes.

I have 11 Acoustics, and I can only put a strap on one. That one came to me the the buttons already in place. I think the best place is the center of the back of the heel. Its out of the way and usually will rest against your body. Some people prefer to put them on the lower inside of the heel because the guitar has a tendency to try to pull away if you let go of it but I find that to be awkward. Dead center. There is plenty of wood to grab a hold of and it is a very strong point as well.

Well, that accurately represents my thought patern also! Shame those aren't your guitars, they look really nice!

Anyone else?

Re: Acoustic Strap Button Position

OK so I've fitted both and they're perfect! Kind of. I hadn't considered that my 12-string would develop nose dive! I've experimented and developed a solution.

I figured I needed a counter-balance, so I experimented on how much weight. The perfect weight came when I hung a bottle of tonic water off the back. It weighed 2lbs. So now I need to get my friendly case and bag mfr to make me a pouch sewn on the strap that'll take a 2lb lump of metal. Probably led/steel/brass.

Apart from that perfect, at least the guitar position is more comfy.

Re: Acoustic Strap Button Position

While I don´t like having the strap button on the treble side of the heel fpr playability reasons, it´s where I would generally recommend mounting them, ;)

I personally mount mine in the middle of the heel, so through the endcap. But this also gives the guitar a tencency to "dip away" forwards. making playing somewhat tedious for people that don´t rest their arm on the treble side of the body. Furthermore you run the high risk of splitting the endcap and thereby inducing an unneccessary and expensive repair bill.

Those "tie up" straps that tie to the headstock may look cool, but they put all of the stress of the instruments weight on the neck and neck /body joint, which can cause warps and other issues in the long run....
